Slow boot with samba error messages when shutting down

hi, i need help.
the boot process of manjaro is very slow, and the message appears:

/dev/nvme0n1p6: clean xxxxx/xxxxxx files, xxxxxx/xxxxxx blocks;

which usually shows up if the shutdown process is not complete.

and then, every time I shutdown, the other messages appears:

[Failed] Failed to start Samba NMB Daemon
[Failed] Failed to start Samba AD Daemon

i’m not sure if those two things are related.

pls anyone help how to fix this. thx

Those are probably there in the console from boot, you just see them at shutdown because you have splashscreen on boot.

Do you use shared folders/samba? Are you in a domain? You should check your samba config and network and probably mask the services if your network situation changed, since they cannot start anyway.

That said, it could be unrelated. The kernel log from previous boot might provide insight

journalctl -b -1 -k --no-pager
2 Likes

Could be related to your /etc/fstab - pointing to nonexisting devices

That is possibly remnants from your boot proces - pointing to a misconfigured samba service

hi, thx for the replies.

I once configured samba to create shared folders, but that was a while ago. I don’t use nor configure samba lately.

I don’t really understand how to inspect the results. What should I look for?
here’s the journalctl output:

looks like fstab is ok. no devices are misconfigured

to me, /etc/fstab looks OK; however, blkid shows what to me is a bit of a mess; looks like you are dual-booting Windows and Linux but with the partitions mingled on the two storage devices, which although probably not the issue, isn’t really ideal.

Also, two EFI and one ESP partition on one disk? Only one of them should be needed.

What I’d suggest is editing the GRUB commandline (via the GRUB menu; press e) and removing quiet and splash so you can see the startup messages while it’s booting, and hopefully spot where it’s getting stuck. (This change is not persistent).

If you are not using samba you might be better just to disable it.

There is a 1 minute 28 seconds gap between the first message and the following ones.
Is the boot process stuck here? I don’t know.

Also:
Your /etc/fstab shows a swap partition
which isn’t present in your blkid output.

… the system is told to look for swap - but there is none (at least not the one it is told to look for).
There is a swap partition on your /dev/sda3 - but that is not the one in /etc/fstab

Well spotted. This will indeed cause a significant delay starting up.

In this case, the OP should replace the one in /etc/fstab with this one:
1751e4a4-7c37-4cf0-bb75-44b9a67cf679
So the line looks like this:
UUID=fb9f30c6-88d1-47a6-aba5-99034be6d52a none swap defaults 0 0

… and do the same for the resume=UUID line in etc/default/grub if hibernation is enabled. Also the hooks line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf needs to have resume for hibernation to work. (This of course assumes there is enough swap defined; something we don’t know yet; no inxi -zv8 output so far).

Except that your /etc/fstab lists a swap partition that according to you blkid output does not seem to exist.

The earlier comment from @linux-aarhus suggests exactly this:

Please comment that entry; reboot; and report how your system then performs. It might be advisable to create a swap partition; however, it’s difficult to progress without more detail.

Please provide full system information:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

Oh my bad… Just realized there is something wrong in the swap partition’s UUID. Now the problem is solved. Big thx to all of you

Perhaps because you’ve just been told that at least 3 times.

Glad your issue is solved.

Bye.
