Several problems after 2023.12.10 Stable Update

Today’s stable update caused problems, this is the first time I have ever had a serious problem with Manjaro in 5 years. Freeze on load up, the system freezes on login after about 2 mins if my wifi adapter is plugged in. The system crashes with the in-kernel rtw88 driver loads or when the out of kernel rtl88x2bu driver loads. Removing the wifi dongle at least allows me to boot into
my system.

Not sure where or how to send info to Manjaro development.
Right now I have removed my wireless adapter (TPLINK Archer T4U RTL8822BU) and replaced it with a wifi dongle with in-kernel support (RALINK RT5572 Chipset).

I have just run into the same situation. WiFi just continues to try and connect, system freezes and can only be turned of with Power Button. I will try removing my WiFi card and try the USB Dongle.

Probably it’s linked to this bug report.

I guess you have no timeshift snap to revert to an older kernel version?

Alternatively, you could try to manjaro-chroot into your system and install Linux kernel 6.7.0rc4-6.

The issue also has been discussed in stable announcement thread.

I momentarily solved it by switching to kernel 5.15 (and Xorg, but I think that is unrelated … (update: it also works with wayland and 5.15 kernel, so definitely kernel-related)).

I am just going to get a 10metre ethernet cable and connect directly to the router and get a powerline adapter/extender with an ethernet port as a back up. Its been nearly 2 decades since I’ve seen an issue with wireless drivers freezing the whole system like this (on other distros). Manjaro used to be so good.

Its a known crappy wireless card with spotty support … well, not actually supported … as I guess you got the driver from AUR right?

And its the driver doing this … I dont think the distro would matter.

(also … as an AUR package … did you … uh … rebuild it after your system updates?)

@Rmano
Are you sure you have the same device? And it is the same problem?
(of course I ask because I dont see it listed in your output)

It may be worth noting also you have a somewhat old BIOS with newer hardware and newer kernels … so … (the output is again minimal so I cant really look up the model to be sure).

For the TPLink Archer T4U wifi adapter I have been using a github driver by Cilynx and has been quite good, GitHub - cilynx/rtl88x2bu: rtl88x2bu driver updated for current kernels.. Even when I removed this driver and used the in-kernel driver (I think its RTW88 ) then this lead to system freezes on startup and shutdown. So I just removed USB WIFI adapter.

Seems some backports to the kernel might have worsen the drivers. Does 6.7 series work better?

I’ll drop this here as it is likely related:

There isn’t a great deal of useful information in that thread, albeit the OPs solution to remove the WiFi antenna drivers may help someone.

No, my card is a RZ608 MT921K, and it used to work with kernel drivers in 6.1 and 6.6, before the update. But the symptoms are exactly the same: no problem if it is not activated, but when activated hang the system, it stops the shutdown with the same pesky “stop job” pinging between waiting 1m 03s and 3m 01s, etc…

I had to use the trick here in older kernel, but it used to work as is in 6.1 and 6.6… I will check this afternoon (CET) when I’m back home with the experimental kernel.

6.1.65-2 and 6.5.4-3 ship with a potential fix: [PATCH] wifi: nl80211: fix deadlock in nl80211_set_cqm_rssi (6.6.x) Upstream however decided to revert the offending patch as stated already. Anyway, test and give feedback.

I applied the update and booted up in 6.6.5-3, all is ok now (well, 2 minutes test, but it was sufficient to hang things up before).
Thank you!
