Secondary Monitor Problem ForceCompositionPipeline=On

After updating my Manjaro, my multi monitor setup broke. My secondary monitor is always shown as “off” in nvidia-settings. I can turn it on there and even drag windows to it, but without any gnome gui and with lots of artifacts.

First I thought that it is a kernel/nonfree driver issue, but even with an architect install with the 5.4 kernel, the problem persisted.

Then I found this For multi-monitor setup you will need to specify ForceCompositionPipeline=On for each display. in the Arch wiki, it sounds like my problem, but I have no idea how to do it.

I can check the option in nvidia-settings and save it to xorg.conf, but to no avail. An the generated xorg.conf shows just my primary device.

Any advice? Thanks!

If you apply it in Nvidia Settings GUI and it doesn’t help then this is not cause of your problem. This setting is responsible for vsync and it works immediately after applying in Nvidia Settings. I’ve been running with it disabled for years, with multi monitor setup. Then I wrote script to enable it via command line after every reboot (because applying it in settings will reset itself after reboot, that’s how Nvidia cares). Never had issue you described though, therefore I doubt it will help you.

Also note that you have recent 3080 Nvidia card. Nvidia is notorious for their lack of Linux support. Why did you bought it?
Open RMA request and describe your issue. You may get a warranty replacement card, maybe your is faulty. If you can, ask for your money back and buy yourself Radeon card which is exceptionally well supported in Linux.

Please post the output of xrandr, xrandr --listproviders, and any custom Xorg configuration (/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*, /etc/X11/xorg.conf) that you use.

Sorry for the late answer and thanks for your help. After resetting my monitor and a clean install this morning everthing is back to normal. It seems that it was the “Adaptive Sync” setting that didn’t work.

(Right now I’m dancing in our homeoffice and photobombing my wifes video conferences :D)

Maybee it’s (also) the HDR setting. Turning it to “auto” is followed by a black screen on next boot
