Second monitor sometimes works

Hi all,

I’ve got quite a weird problem with my second monitor. I’m one of the lucky souls on a laptop with a hybrid GPU (AMD Cezanne/NVIDIA GA106M). Let me try to explain it as best as i can.

I switched to Manjaro (KDE) recently and everything seemed to work fine. At the end of the day went to bed, next day i boot up my system and my second monitor is gone. Tried everything i could think of (switching cables, rebooting, reinstalling drivers, trying kernels, using envycontrol, you name it…) to get it working. Nothing worked and i gave up. Next day, i just wanted to try again just to be sure. Hook up my monitor and it works. No problems at all.

Next day i come back and guess what? My second monitor stopped working again.

After a lot of trying i came to the following conclusions.

  • If i boot (cold/warm boot) my laptop with the monitor connected to the HDMI and i turn the monitor on, it “disconnects”. The screen freezes and i can do whatever i want, but i won’t get it back on. Rebooting doesn’t help, it gives a no signal.
  • If i boot (cold boot) and the HDMI is NOT connected and i plug it in later the second monitor will work without any problem.
  • If the monitor doesn’t work a reboot won’t fix it. I even tried to shutdown the system and try it an hour later, same result.
  • If the monitor doesn’t work and i unplug the HDMI cable and try it the next day, it will work.

Anyone got a clue on where to start? inxi in next post.

Current state: HDMI connected, monitor not working.

Hi @Ronster

I am not running KDE.

Correct me if I am wrong. But it looks like your monitor settings in kde settings are not saved for next boot.

I think it is simpler to find the solution in the kde gui.

Probably when hdmi connected after boot works. kde maybe uses auto find and connect the hdmi.

Not at boot, because it does not save the settings.

A kde user can guide you if needed.

Hello @Ronster and welcome to the Manjaro Community! :vulcan_salute:

No expert here, but this could be a clue:

It looks to me like the monitor isn’t (properly) sending its EDID, so Wayland doesn’t know what to do with it.

Maybe the outputs of these commands will help others:

sudo dmesg | grep -Ei 'edid|drm'

and

journalctl -b | grep -Ei 'edid|drm|dp|hdmi'

… I don’t suppose you have another monitor you could try? (It could be a cable issue to).

It’s also worth checking in (U)EFI settings for anything monitor-related.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

Both give an error for retrieving memory pages, but this started since i’m using kernel 7.0. On 6.19 i didn’t see this error, but i had the issue with the second monitor.

I hooked it up to my tv and that worked fine. Could be monitor related as it is quite old. One of the earlier 1080p devices with hdmi. On the other hand, i only ran into this using Manjaro.

What i did notice was this error message, which i also only had on Manjaro. Could this be related?

ACPI BIOS Error (bug): AE_AML_BUFFER_LIMIT, Index (0x000000032) is beyond end of object (length 0x32) (20251212/exoparg2-393)

As far as I can tell, this does tie in with an EDID issue. I do (or did) have a TV/monitor which KDE wouldn’t recognize.

There is a way of reading the EDID (I’ll need to refresh my memory on that) and at least with x11, IIRC also a way of incorporating that with xrandr. Not sure what Wayland would involve in that regard. I’ll try to get back to you a bit later on that.

I’m not sure about that last ACPI BIOS error. :man_shrugging:

Well, it turns out the the ACPI bug is a HP thing. Could be related to the issue i’m having, but i’m not sure.

What I did find out is that the issue i have is 100% monitor related. Even after hooking it up to another system it didn’t work. The monitor gets into a state it won’t get out of. The only solution is to remove power (unplug the cable) on the monitor. I gave my monitor and laptop a dedicated power strip, which basically solves the problem.

Still a lot of thanks for your support!
