Second monitor recognized but no signal

Hi
I use Manjaro and KDE. I have an nvidia GPU and use the proprietary drivers. After some updates my second display connected via HDMI stopped working. The display itself says, it doesn’t get any signal. The display is connected and recognized in the system settings, by xrandr and the nvidia settings.
In the login screen both monitors work fine.
The monitor works fine with windows. I dual boot with Manjaro and Windows, they’re on separate ssds tho.

xrandr gives me that output:

Hi @dreamAviator,

Have you tried Wayland?

Also, please provide the output to:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

I have not yet tried Wayland but let me test that real quick

also outputs:

I will try Wayland now

Okay so turns out I was using Wayland. I now switched to X11 and I have the same problem.
Also everything is a bit laggy and slow

I don’t know what to do then so this is me, taking a wild guess.

Seeing as you’re using Plasma:

…please provide the output of:

kscreen-doctor --outputs

output:

Even if u don’t have a fix thank you for your help.
I just have to think about what doing then
Do you think the issue is KDE Plasma or Manjaro?

Neither. Both connected and seems to be enabled:

So to me this is looking more and more like a faulty monitor…

The thing is, with windows everything works fine. Stopped working after some updates, don’t know which. And also the login screen and the console view (when you press control + alt + f3)
So I don’t really get how the monitor should be at fault.

Me neither. But stranger things have happened, I think. Try this, maybe it helps:

Edit:

Deleting the $HOME/.local/share/kscreen is, apparently, like a reset of your display settings. So you could try that:

mv $HOME/.local/share/kscreen $HOME/.local/share/kscreen.backup

…and see if you can just reconfigure it.

The symptoms you’re having seem remarkably similar to another recent topic;

The user’s issue was solved by addressing a related issue regarding the new Nvidia 570 drivers and the Plymouth (the three dots) boot screen. Disabling Plymouth actually solved their issue.

Perhaps you can have a look at the respective solution linked from that topic, and see if it brings any joy.

Regards.

I did that but nothing changed
I tried changing the resolution now
I just set it to a random value (800×600) and now it works somehow

I will see what I can do with the resolution

Alright
I now changed it back to 1920×1080 and it works
Thank you for your help and time
Why didn’t I think of trying this earlier…
Anyway thank you!

Okay noy take that back
Somehow it stops working if I set the refresh rate to 165

120 hz works, 144 and 165 doesn’t
Weird
But it’s not that big of an issue rn
I think I will try display port later tho and see if the issue persists

Well, as you haven’t even acknowleged any of my posts, I’ll remove them. I’m glad you found a resolution.

Regards.

Oh
I’m sorry I didn’t reply to any of your posts. I definitely read them.
And I would like to know what your last suggestion was?

Thank you for trying to help me though, I hope I didn’t come off as unfriendly, sorry :c

Not unfriendly, but clearly focussed. :smile_cat:

It’s not needed now, anyway, but I’ve restored it (scroll up). It was a longshot at best, if nothing else worked.

Regards.

Oh okay
Thank you nonetheless

I will try to see if I can get 165hz working again
If not 120 is not that bad
At least I don’t have to use Windows for my daily use anymore

Actually, that just triggered a memory from a topic a few months ago. I recall mentioned that each monitor is best having a resolution that’s supported by both monitors.

So, in your case I might translate that as; if the laptop screen and the external monitor suppoer 120Hz - all good; but if the external monitor supports 165Hz and the laptop doesn’t - not so good.

Of course, this is conjecture, at best.

Regards.

Hm
Interestingly my internal monitor has 144hz, it’s a value I can’t change
So now I have 144 and 120
And 144hz on my external screen didn’t work :woman_shrugging:

But do you mean buggy with not so good? Or just unstable in general?
