  • Kernels tried:
    • 6.6 LTS
    • 6.5
    • 6.1 LTS
    • 5.15 LTS
  • Desktop environment; issue happens in all of
    • both X11 and Wayland (KDE Plasma)
    • bspwm session (X11)
  • Nvidia
    • Proprietary driver, however:
    • Issue still happens even if I uninstall linux**-nvidia driver
    • using PRIME
    • Tried with/without rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1 kernel parameter
    • Tried nvidia? in mkinitcpio.conf’s modules seciton

Description of Issue

Desktop session suddenly crashes and results in black screen, and often leaves a rectangle pattern around the cursor area.

Pictures of the issue

Going tty or using SysRq key does not work after this crash (Forcibly holding the power button to power off is only the way.)

If I enable sound output before the crash, it gives noise

Happens even if I disable nvidia driver.

After I use Wayland (KDE), it happens a little less frequently but still happens quite often.

This issue continues occuring since more than 6 months ago.

Triggers to reproduce this crash

The crash happens regardless of context, and there is no clear trigger that can reproduce this issue 100%.
However, there were some triggers that used to work (but some don’t work now):

  • Launch KSystemLog
    • Press Journald Log button several times
    • If not crashing, go other tabs (Kernel Log or X.org Log) and go back to Journald Log tab
    • This used to reproduce nearly 100% back then, but now it rarely happens with this procedure.
  • Launch Android Studio
    • go SDK manager
    • select update menus and wait for few seconds
    • Currently this has the highest reproducibility on my environment
    • (even though it was not a trigger back then)

Is there anything I can do to examine further this issue?

Thank you so much for your help!

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information.
  1. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.

Have you already :mag: for your problem in the forum ? (Wisdom lies in asking → listening → reading  )

First of all i would suggest to look into hardware

  • Replug RAM
  • Reset BIOS
  • Replug Graphic-Card
  • Dust ???
  • Replug Cables

    :footprints:

Hello!
Again, thank you so much for your effort in helping with issues!
Your help is very much appreciated!
Today, I would like to post some update to this problem.

Background Information

First off, I have never been able to resolve this crash problem yet and am still suffering from the issue;
I have sent the device back to Dell Repair service and they replaced motherboard:

  1. At first moment it got returned, the crash issue seemed to be fixed.
  2. However, the crash started happening again (same symptom)
    • since I plugged in HDMI to USB-C converter cable.

Main Topic / Possible Clue to Solution

I just recently figured out relevant factor to this crash: cstate of the Intel CPU.
When I add the kernel argument to regulate the cstate, it reduced the frequency of my device getting crashing (but still crashes):

processor.max_cstate=4 intel_idle.max_cstate=4

And today I set the max cstate to be 1:

processor.max_cstate=1 intel_idle.max_cstate=1

then I get no crashing so far (I am still not sure if the crash is totally gone yet; I’ll post update if the crash happens again with this configuration)

So, the cause of the crash issue is possibly (but highly) related to intel cpu’s cstate being 2 or above.

This pretty much make sense because the crash was happening very frequently when the device got woke up from sleep (or hibernate), or doing no operation on the device; those situation are likely to make OS trigger low energy mode of the CPU, as I imagine.

And I would like to know if anyone else is able to replicate this issue:

Steps

  • XPS 15 9520
  • KDE Plasma
  • Launch KSystemLog
  • press Journald Log button many times
    • (if you can see the progress bar, wait for it to appear before press the button many times)

Thank you for your time!

Ah, right. Was double checking everything that I’m not missing something, but forgot to check the date. :stuck_out_tongue:

Based on your image, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a hardware issue. I have a broken PCIe slot in some way, because I could never make my RX480 work in Linux and in Windows I had random crashes and weird screen artefacts. (I know it’s some motherboard problem, because I replaced older GPU thinking it’s its fault.)

If you have some other GPU, try that.
