Screen brightness is not retained between reboots

Hello good day, thanks for the update.

BTW I successfully install the update but, I got a small problem, the brightness level is not retained between reboots. After adjusting the brightness level then after reboot on startup the brightness level will go back to around 5 or 10 percent only.

Does anybody experience this or know how to fix it?
Thanks

P.S. My DE is KDE Plasma

Maybe you can give some more information on your system, e.g. CPU/GPU, Kernel, etc. (or just post the output of
inxi --full --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host
if you are unsure).

Personally I noticed that since switching to Kernel 5.8 I’m seeing some issues with the backlight brightness. In that case, you might try to switch back to Kernel 5.7 and see if it helps.

Actually I’m still no 5.7

BTW here is the output

Maybe it’s a bug in the recent Mesa update or it’s related to KDE, which all of us three seem to use.

I also observe, this will only happen if I have an external monitor during power down.

You should try swapping to 5.8 and see if that actually fixes your issue or not.

I have the same problem, but it’s not just reboot , it’s happend when my laptop wakeup from suspend .

I think brightness level is write into a configfile(like /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/brightness), so it’s no bother kernel with brightness right?

Yes I tried but got no luck.

Do you think this is a kernel problem? I even tried install kernel 5.4 with no avail and got same problem.
Luckily I have timeshift installed, did quick restore and just install the latest kernel 5.7 and everything seems fine.

I think it is probably not a kernel issue. Seems to happen on 5.7 as well now for me.
On 5.8 it behaves slightly differently (first adjustment after reboot sets it to minimum, then it works) than on 5.7 (just at maximum after reboot, first adjustment works normally).
But it seems present on both and it coincides with the recent Mesa updates, so maybe it’s related to that?

Anyone tried to check systemctl status systemd-backlight@... service?

I just stumbled about this post FAILED to start Load/Save #ness of backlight:acpi_video0 - Newbie Corner - Manjaro Linux Forum

I can’t test this on my machine right now.

@gilcon
I have been getting this message before the issue appeared and still get it.

I upgrade a few hours ago and it seems to work, didn’t have the issue anymore, if you exclude Mesa from the update.

I still have Mesa 20.1.3-1.

Hi, i finally get rid of the problem.
In the system settings > energy configuration, i put the desired brightness for my screen and it keeps the level after reboot.
Hope this helps for you.

What version of Mesa are you in, when I downgrade to Mesa 20.1.3-1, it fixed the problem, I can just adjust the brightness using the battery widget, without changing it on the system settings.

Tried to downgrade the Mesa to 20.1.3-1, but sadly it does not work on my machine.

I use KDE Plasma too and the screen brightness resets to 1/3 - 1/2 of the maximum brightness after each restart of the laptop. I see that the reset is done just when I press the Enter key in the login form, so the OS starts up well. After I set the brightness to 100% and just log out and log in again the brightness remains 100%.

If it helps to say it, I use a dual-screen configuration and the main screen is the one with lower than usual brightness. Is there a way to configure the brightness level automatically to be 100% at log in / startup?

Thank you!

I have the same issue since the last update. My laptop brightness resets to 5% on every startup despite changing it each time.
