SbK Openbox 24.2.1

I am happy to announce the release of SbK Openbox 24.2.1.

The “SpinsbyKilz.com ” watermark is not present in the installed desktop.

A little more work was done since the initial release. The Openbox icon for the start menu in the dock was added. Improved the theming of the menu that pops up when you click on the desktop. All in all it looks good.

Both iso’s in this release include:

  1. The 6.6.65 LTS kernel.
  2. The New KoraSpin-Blue19 icon theme with light and dark versions.
  3. The new SpinThemeDarkBlue24 matching Gtk and Kvantum themes in one package.
  4. The new Usplash-24.2.1 desktop wallpapers. One of them is the background for the grub, desktop, and login screen backgrounds.
  5. The iso’s are up to date as of 12/18/2024.
  6. Openbox menu icon in dock to bring up applications. Its color matches the shell theme.
  7. An optional Firefox theme, SbK Dark Blue24, that matches the color scheme is available here Firefox Themes just click on the image in Firefox to install it.

Both iso’s also contain the standard SbK features.

  1. The latest LTS kernel.
  2. A Manjaro stable install.
  3. The AUR is available in pamac. Please read the AUR section of the SbK Best Practices page before using the AUR. AUR packages are not supported by Arch or Manjaro.
  4. It is multiarch by default to make running wine games and other 32bit software you may run easier.
  5. The Spins by Kilz signed repository is enabled for SbK project packages.
  6. A signed iso. For information on checking signed iso’s visit Check ISO
  7. Bloatware has been removed (HP printer software and others).
  8. Flat packs and snaps are not installed. The back ends are also not installed but can be installed by the user.
  9. All SbK iso’s contain Manjaro Architect script in case you want to do a custom install. To get any SbK packages like themes, icons, and other goodies you will have to add the SbK Repository after install.
  10. Timeshift autosnap installed. It takes a snapshot before upgrading so any bad upgrades can be easily reversed.

A full and very minimal iso can be found here.

As always comments, suggestions, and questions are welcome.

Jim

This finishes the 24.2.1 series.

Openbox - the window manager of all time.
Good to see that it still attracts interest from users and distro/spin creators
Once you get to know it and get used to it, you can completely lose interest in other DE/WMs.

It is a good DE. I mainly run LXQt with Openbox as the window manager. But I would like the focus of SbK to be on low resource offerings. So away went Gnome and Openbox took its place. Its nice and fast even on my 10 year old hardware. This is only its second release in SbK, it should get even better with time.

@napcok is the maintainer of mabox based on Manjaro.

Yours truly was maintainer of the Manjaro Community openbox edition for a couple of years.

I kind of figured that by the user icon. Its a nice distro. At one time I thought I would create a distro, but after building spins I decided it was likely way to much work.

Its likely I used a profile you used as a maintainer in creating this spin. Sadly Openbox isnt included in the current iso profiles, but I have quite a few older profile sets. I am horrible at cleaning out old files. It took a few tries to get it to work, mainly replacing obsolete packages and adapting it to my scripted build setup. But its still good for the most part.
