SbK Mate-Compiz 24.0.7

I am happy to announce the release of SbK Mate-Compiz 24.0.7.

The SpinsbyKilz.com watermark is not present in the installed OS.

A minimal iso with a panel instead of a dock is available.

All iso’s in this release include:

  1. The 6.6.46 LTS kernel.
  2. Compiz 9 with the rotating cube for virtual desktops, faded windows in the background, wobbly windows, and other effects.
  3. The New KoraSpin-Tan6 icon theme with light and dark versions of the control icons. It is part of the KoraSpin-24.0.7 package.
  4. The new SpinThemeDarkTan7 matching Gtk and Kvantum themes in one package.
  5. The new Usplash-24.0.7 desktop wallpapers. One of them is the background for the grub, desktop, and login screen backgrounds.
  6. A basic Conky with matching color theme.
  7. The iso’s are up to date as of 8/21/2024
  8. An optional Firefox theme, SbK Dark Tan7 that matches the color scheme is available here, Firefox Themes just click on the image in Firefox to install it.

All iso’s also contain the standard SbK features.

  1. The latest LTS kernel.
  2. A Manjaro stable install that is also AUR compatible. In the full iso there are also a lot of packages used to build packages installed. AUR packages are not supported by Arch or Manjaro.
  3. It is multiarch by default to make running wine games and other 32bit software you may run easier.
  4. The Spins by Kilz signed repository is enabled for SbK project packages.
  5. A signed iso. For information on checking signed iso’s visit Check ISO
  6. Bloatware has been removed (HP printer software and others).
  7. Flat packs and snaps are not installed. The back ends are also not installed but can be installed by the user.
  8. All SbK iso’s contain Manjaro Architect script in case you want to do a custom install. To get any SbK packages like themes, icons, and other goodies you will have to add the SbK Repository after install.
  9. Timeshift autosnap installed. It takes a snapshot before upgrading so any bad upgrades can be easily reversed.
  10. A basic Conky with a color scheme to match the other themes.

A full and very minimal iso can be found here.

As always comments, questions and suggestions are always welcome.

Jim

Hi Jim,

i am really happy that you keep this up to date, but i am also worried about the state of this little spin.

Our little friend is back

repo.spinsbykilz.com : Operation too slow. Less than 1 bytes/sec transferred the last 10 seconds
failed to retrieve some files

What can I do? I also have the same issue on two systems.

As always, thank you for this work!

SbK spins is a foss project, and funding is next to non existent, so I have to use free hosting for the repository. I will change the host to one of the backups to see if it helps. It may take a few hours for the change to take effect.

Hi Jim,
sorry to bother you (again…). The current update breaks compiz. Where? I don’t really know. These are the last lines with compiz --replace:

XIO: fatal IO error 4 (Interrupted system call) on X server “:0”
after 24135 requests (24135 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
Is it possible to fix it?

On the other issue: Will it help if i look for a little VPS server to mirror the sbk-repo?

Again, thank you for your on-going support. I imagine it is a lot of work for a very small group. This is the only project i know of, which has a up-to-date tree of this old software stack at a current system. I rely on compiz features like magnification, so i am worried. What are the long term prospects?

Compiz is an AUR package, it is no longer in the Manjaro repositories. I build it for the spins. But because there was no update in the second half of September, and I build Debian spins on the 1st of every month there is a delay in the Manjaro release series. Manjaro LXQt is going to be announced today.
I will build a new compiz package and upload it today. This isnt a case of a server issue, its a case of an old package that need updating.

I have rebuilt the compiz package against the other updates and uploaded it. You just need to upgrade.

Thank you so much.

So it is “just” a issue of dependencies and shared libs…i hope for the best :).

I am pretty sure it is. I have had to rebuild the package every few releases so far. I also built a mate-compiz test iso afterward and it works fine.
If compiz stops working for you in the future, just do what you did and post here, rebuilding the package doesnt take long.
