Running First Wine Application causes system to slow down

I recently got a beefy Thinkpad P52. I installed Manjaro and everything works perfectly. However, whenever I run wine for the first time, the system slows down for about 15 seconds until the application lunches. By slow down, I mean I can’t even move the mouse pointer. Also, it doesn’t matter which application I run; even notepad. I searched for solutions and some suggested that I run “wineserver --persistent”. I did that, but while it makes the application lunch faster, the slow down I described above is still there. I’ll be grateful for any help.

Have you already :mag: for your problem in the forum ? (Wisdom lies in asking → listening → reading :wink: )

I did that.

See Wine - ArchWiki and the troubleshooting part of the Wine FAQ that is linked there (specifically “10.2.2 My whole computer freezes, reboots, or shuts off when I run my game in Wine!”)

First thing to try is clearing the default prefix - rm -rf ~/.wine.

Do you ever used Bottles? Just curious if maybe you gonna have same issue on Bottles too…
I use Bottles flatpak…

Thanks for your reply. The first thing I tried was clearing the old wine prefix. They didn’t help.

I read section 10.2.2. It says if the computer freezes. In my case, the computer doesn’t freeze. It just hangs for a few seconds. It also says that this is a not a problem with wine, but a hardware problem. I don’t have any hardware problems.

What it actually says is hardware driver (or other examples of possible system faults). The point is that Wine shouldn’t be locking your system up like that, and doesn’t for the many other users of Wine on Manjaro, so it’s something particular to your system.

Here’s a simple test to compare - Download Space Cadet Pinball from here (it’s totally safe and legal). Rename the downloaded .exe to .zip and extract it somewhere. Then from the command line cd to where you extracted it and run it as I have below.

Since it’s a new prefix it will ask to install Mono when you run pinball.exe. Choose cancel. After clicking cancel the game should start within 2-3 seconds. Here’s what I get when I do that and then immediately exit the game;

$ rm -rf ~/.wine
$ wine --version
wine-8.20
$ wine pinball.exe

wine: configuration in L"/home/medwatt/.wine" has been updated.
0024:fixme:mci:MCI_LoadMciDriver Couldn't load driver for type L"PINBALL.MID".

Closing and running it again, I get this:

wine pinball.exe                                           1m 13s

0024:fixme:mci:MCI_LoadMciDriver Couldn't load driver for type L"PINBALL.MID".

It seems that it is when explorer.exe loads that causes the system to freeze momentarily.

I suspect

0074:fixme:shell:create_link failed to connect to mount manager

and

003c:fixme:service:scmdatabase_autostart_services Auto-start service L"MountMgr" failed to start: 126

is the problem. But I don’t have an answer. Maybe that info will help someone else though.

Perhaps less Wine at Lunchtime is better…

Seriously, Wine can be a pig - but it also helps what application you’re testing.

For example, if I launch ‘Battle of Polytopia’ with Wine, it takes about 20 seconds to appear - but works reasonably well.

Another app I use (Line.exe) is more of a pig and tends to mess up desktop graphics (the window leaves an outline on all desktops if it isn’t put away when I’m not looking at it).

Bottles tends to be the best way for me to install and run LINE, but Polytopia opens fine with just WINE.

Where did you get your pinball.exe ?

As I said in my first post, running notepad itself causes a slow down.

@medwatt Hi, I have a same issue on the Thinkpad P15 Gen2. Issue is a related to the modesetting Xorg driver and the Intel cards when nVidia card are present too, switching back to intel driver solves it. But… introduces artifacts in the Xorg: screen capture tools can capture old screens instead of actual one. WA: disable/enable system effects. I turned off DRI3 today, now collect information…

Regression was occurred after some previous system upgrade.

Note, xrandr --listproviders also slow down system for a short time in combination above (intel+nvidia and modesetting driver for the intel card). geeqie starts also slow downed.

UPD 2024-03-14: sounds like turning off DRI3 on the Intel driver (opposite to Modesetting one) solves issues with artifacts like “old image” on screen capture. My Xorg config now is (/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf):

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    #Driver "modesetting"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"

    # integrated intel
    BusId "PCI:0:2:0"

    Option "DRI" "2" # Turn Off DRI3 here
    Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

BusId must be adjusted for your system. It is fully conform to the lscpi output but without leading zeroes.
