Hi guys,
Has anyone managed to get any of the RTX4000 series cards working on KDE/Wayland? I have tried Garuda/Manjaro KDE and the Gnome versions too but no luck so far. I’m on Xfce but would like to take the advantage of the 4080 for gaming/simulation. THX!!
Hi @pepe999,
As far as I know, the Desktop Environment you’re using doesn’t affect what the hardware can be used for.
And regarding Nvidia and Wayland, there seems to be quite some (I daresay teething) problems, hence why we don’t have Plasma 6.1 yet.
That said, I think it’s nearly there. I know that Nvidia, the driver version currently in use, has issues with Wayland and suspend, which is why I’m not using Wayland yet. I’m hoping for an AMD card, sooner rather than later.
I have but a GTX 960, but I’ve seen this for all cards, honestly.
Well, Wayland supposed to be like an upgrade over X11. I’m on a laptop so can’t replace the vga. Unfortunately AMD cards are too inferior to the nVidia ones in laptops so couldn’t get a decent laptop for the X-Plane sim.
And nuts are supposed to taste good. But they don’t. And I’m allergic. But my wife loves them!
Luckily for you, the Nvidia and Wayland support is getting better. My allergy won’t, nor will the taste of nuts change. That’s life.
I don’t mind nuts but don’t eat them. Trust me you are not missing anything.
Thaaat’s what I thought…
But my point is some settings works for some people. Others not.
Yes I know but it’s still frustrating. One of the reasons why linux is not much popular is the fact that gaming is not well supported. I mean the real native gaming and not some Steam games for 3 years old. The nVidia settings has been poor forever even if you managed to get it installed with the drivers.
Well, I have World Turtles here, working flawlessly on X11, and I ran Starcraft 2 once with better settings than I had with Windows.

and
In the long run for sure, but not right now.
I can play almost everything, besides some Low Level Anti-Cheat/VR Titles or Simracing Hardware like Wheel/Pedals or Telemetry Software for my Basskicker’s.
Im a long time hardcore gamer and im total happy with my 2080Ti and X11 with the gaming performance under Manjaro KDE right now.
Most games running with equal or better performance… specially retro games with DX9-DX10 showing sometimes 100% performance boost, because Windows sucks.
Though not directly related to the RTX 4000, you might find this link particularly interesting, if not illuminating:
A little something to gather your nuts...
It seems like it’s working now after the latest update. I was able to login with Plasma/Wayland, it says the driver is loaded and X-plane simulator is being installed. It wouldn’t start without the proprietary drivers loaded.
