RTL8761B/BU USB Bluetooth Adapter Disconnect/Reconnect Randomly

Hi,

I’ve been having a long-standing issue with Bluetooth USB adapters. I originally had an unbranded adapter, however now I’ve recently purchased a StarTech USB Bluetooth adapter (USBA-BLUETOOTH-V5-C2). I’ve recently performed a fresh reinstall and am running Kernel 6.17.1.

The issue is that the Bluetooth will randomly but relatively frequently drop out and cause the device(s) to disconnect and reconnect. There is no error reported in dmesg, only that the device has connected, and taken the next available input handle.

I’ve tried a number of fixes - disabling autosuspend by device (confirmed to have taken effect through the flag “/sys/bus/usb/devices/3-2/power/control” reporting “on” as opposed to auto. I’ve tried physically moving the USB slot (2 and 3). I’ve tried renaming and symlinking the RTL8761B drivers in place of the RTL8761BU drivers, plus others I can’t recall.

I have confirmed the device doesn’t appear to be at fault as it works on a Windows machine. This behaviour also applies to controllers connected.

Am I missing something obvious?

How do I go about investigating as to why the device has disconnected?

Thanks

Hi @j8a,

Thanks. Apologies, I was caught up in the detail of what I’ve tried and forgot the important bit of what my actual hardware is.

Please see the below output. The adapter ID in question is 0bda:8771.

Hi @Toma678 ,

Looking the output I think that the bluetooth device is installed and available. You could try different ways to look what is happening:

The bluethoot device is blocked?

rfkill list

Is the blootooth loaded in the kernel 6.17?

lsmod | grep btusb

Also, you can search in the forum RTL8761B and there are different approaches which try to solve the problem. The best answer I can give is to try a different kernel or install linux617-headers.

Hope it help,

Regards,

Thanks @j8a,

Unfortunately, all seems to be well in-terms of blocking and kmod requirements.

I have tried installing the headers, to no avail. Interestingly, the behaviour does change when utilising the firmware blob from a Windows machine, and disconnections are far less frequent. The Windows firmware blob has a name containing the words “patch_new” and is dropped in the C drive on W10, seemingly indicating that there is some odd behaviour that needed a patch.

The “Out of the box” firmware version is 0xdfc6d922 on Linux.

Perhaps this question may be better served in the Linux Firmware board?

Hi @Toma678 ,

I agree with you.

Kind regards,

Possibly.

Firstly, the following information is not to suggest a problem with firmware, but to provide information that might be useful.

The current linux-firmware-realtek in the Stable branch repository is 20250917-1, however, a later iteration (20251021-1) is in both the Testing and Unstable branches.

If there are issues with the current firmware, that might well be remedied by the later firmware, so it’s a question of waiting for it to reach Stable.

Consider using kernel 6.12 (LTS) if only to verify whether or not the issue persists.

I found this which links to the CD that came with the original device – this is apparently not available from the Realtek site – I mention this in case you should find a use for it:

Have you considered that your issue might be environmental? Wireless technologies typically depend more on line-of-sight than is generally acknowledged in the wild.

Example: My daughter once complained of similar disconnections over an extended period (several months). It was discovered this that this occurred only when someone entered the room through a particular doorway – or, more specifically, when that door was left open at certain angles – it was enough to tip the balance so to speak.
