Resume From Standby Broken

I have an XPS 13 9350 (Skylake model) that fails to resume from standby (and hibernate). Some other things to add is that I am using Wayland, just upgraded to Gnome 43, and this issue happens in BOTH my Linux Kernels (6.0.8 and 5.15.78-LTS). This started a few days ago after doing a major update of a ton of packages (Testing Branch), everything was working perfectly for MONTHS before this.

Behavior:
-I close my laptop lid, the power light goes out just as it’s expected.
-When I open the lid, the power light turns on, and the screen stays black…it looks like it is trying to resume, but it never wakes up, after waiting 5+ min.

If I can provide any additional troubleshooting information (logs, configurations, etc.) please let me know. But that’s the behavior currently.

Let’s focus on one thing first: resume from suspend. Ignore hibernation from now, it’s a different “beast”.

Is there a BIOS update available? Are you sure it suspends correctly?
Could you give us more logs?

No BIOS update available at this time. Pretty sure it is suspending correctly (power LED goes off after a few seconds of closing the lid). Again, this happened after the slew of updates that were released a few days ago. My laptop has been working correctly for months before the latest testing branch updates (which includes Gnome 43).

Sure, which specific logs can I provide at this point?

Thanks!

That looks like the reason if I understand that correctly. RMRR (Reserved Memory Region Reporting) is there to reserve memory for the BIOS, so that the OS does not touch it. If there is firmware bug here, linux cannot know if this area is reserved or not.

Possibly that leads to this error:

where the mouse (touchpad) is blocked. [ I/O Error ]

With these information I would just think, that there was a workaround for this firmware bug, but was removed recently.

Could you send a full log of the suspend process?

journalctl --boot -1 | sed -n -r "/Starting.+Suspend/,/Finished.+Suspend/p"

:notebook: -1 means previous boot

Thanks for the quick reply and assistance!

  1. It seems there is no report that the lid closed, but just opened:
  1. There seems to be a problem with i915 driver at wakeup process.
  1. Is there difference when you run this?
systemctl suspend

So, kicking off the systmctl command to suspend it, it appears it actually shuts the machine down. The Power LED turns off correctly, but when I press it to try and ‘wake’ the laptop, it instead starts from the boot screen. So, it basically shuts down the machine and I am starting from a fresh boot for some reason.

Thanks again for all of your time and help, it is greatly appreciated!

The log indicates that it does “suspend-then-hibernate”. There is an option to disable this. Please focus first on suspend.

Thanks @mithrial, do you know where I can switch this off? Not sure where it is set currently.

Probably here: /etc/systemd/sleep.confAllowSuspendThenHibernate=no or a file in that directory: /etc/systemd/sleep.conf.d/.

Or here: /etc/systemd/logind.conf.

Update:

Doing some digging, I think I may have found the root-cause of my issue. It appears to be an issue with the systemd:amd64 package, more details here:

In the instructions, it says you can validate by rolling back to the previous package:

"Manually rolling back to 252-2 makes system to work again"

Can anyone provide some quick steps on how I can perform this rollback of systemd:amd64 package please?

Thanks again to everyone for your time and help. It is greatly appreciated!

Systemd is on version 251.8-1 in stable/testing and 252.1-1 in unstable.
Branch-Compare: systemd

IMHO, they mean the systemd version not the package version of your distro…
Eg. If that bug was seen in v252 you should try one lower (v251)

IIRC, they (systemd devs) are/have been working on this functionality’s hickups for some time…
Best is to use hibernate only without the suspend combo…

Thanks @TriMoon, how do I roll back the systemd package to v251? Any quick steps would be super appreciated.

Thanks everyone for your time and help!

But still, the testing branch is 251, not 252.

You can downgrade with downgrade systemd (However, with systemd being one the most important packages on your machine, I don’t recommend it downgrading which results in a partial update state.)

mithrial beat me to it and said everything i could

Just for visibility, looks like there is an official bug report from the Debian / Arch team on this also:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1023483

I have downgraded to version of systemd to version 251 with no major issues. Suspend works again and it appears things are back to ‘normal’ for the time being.
