The screen just goes blank, the mouse pointer is there, this started happening 2 updates ago. I have to hit power on the sys to shutdown or retart. I have KDE, but this seems like the DE wouldn’t be the prob. so I put it here.
Try disabling saved session restore. Configure it to start with an empty desktop. Also, log out of Plasma, log in at a tty, and empty your ~/.cache
, like so…
rm -rf ~/.cache/*
Exit the tty
by pressing Ctrl+D, and return to your login screen with Alt+←, or just reboot.

I had the same problem, i found following solution on the Archlinux BBS:
Go to System Setting, then do the following:
- System settings > Session > Desktop Session, [select] ‘Start with an empty session’ and reboot
Since then my Reboots work flawless. You even can turn on the Option after a Reboot.
Edit: seems Aragorn has the same solution, if that is the case, Sorry for that.
