Resources barely used, slowdowns, some freezing - Video playback using Firefox - Worked fine on W11

Hi! New user here, switched from Win11 to Manjaro Gnome about two days ago. Fresh install.

Everything works mostly right, did my updates. I’m using propietary NVIDIA drivers, and two monitors. I setup a VM for Win7 to play some old games, that works mostly right, the mouse pointer is a bit laggy but I don’t mind.

Anyway, my issue is that I can’t do anything else with the proper response time whenever I’m running a game on one monitor and a youtube video on the other. If I switch windows, for example from the game to Firefox, and I try to scroll down it’s slow and barely responsive. Still the video playback works, but it starts looking choppy.

I don’t know what to expect from Manjaro tbh, I just have the Win11 frame and this whole setup used to work flawlessly over there, but I’m here to stay and want to setup base Arch when I’m comfortable in the future. I’m running Proton with Steam, switching to GE or 8.0 doesn’t make any difference, games run great.

Here’s my system’s info:

Here’s a Conky and System Monitor screenshot while running both the video playback at 1080@60 and the game Yog-Sothoth’s Yard, which is a light 2d game. I don’t see anything alarming, yes my CPU temp is a bit warm but it’s not even reaching 70°. I also noticed that when I click the + to add a new Firefox tab, the tab appears, stutters for a bit trying to grow in size and then I can use it.

Wanted to add, that I tried adding a SWAP file and switching Kernels to 7.x and 5.x and nothing changed. The game runs fine capped @60, I notice screen tearing but the main monitor runs @144 so that’s expected, I think?

You are not the only one. Explicit sync is not implemented in newer official drivers. I don’t use Nvidia any longer so I am not exactly sure when that popped up. I’ve heard around 535. So try some earlier than that driver. Frogging Family over on Github should have you covered. GitHub - Frogging-Family/nvidia-all: Nvidia driver latest to 396 series AIO installer
Interesting setup with 3 DIMMs.

For the VM, I always go for VNC. Spice lags too much for me, even when testing distros and I am on the desktop. To do this you would need to delete a couple default devices, otherwise it complains and wont start, at least on my computer. You might have to redo the win7 install, I don’t know.
Display Spice, switch to VNC server. Channel (spice), click Remove. And the 2 USB Redirectors, Remove them too. That should be it. Tablet might be enticing to remove. If you do that, mouse wont work at all.

EDIT: If you are using newer OSes, I recommend you enable UEFI-mode. virtmanager2 — Postimages
Otherwise they will be installed in MBR-mode. One problem that can arise is if you’re trying to install a linux distro with the normal EFI partition, it will fail every time.
Have to do that before installation. There’s a checkbox that says something like Modify/Customize setup, tick that. While I am at it, I also remove the Spice stuff.

You have no swap space configured. This could be the root of your woes.

Oh, haven’t tried downgrading drivers yet, I’ll try!

Still, games work fine, and I believe I saw Helldivers 1 running at 144hz the other day. Should test again. It’s just the multitasking. And I never run out of memory or anything. CPU “LOAD” on conky goes to 4 sometimes but I don’t even know how to read that number.

And I used to have two sticks, but was training simple ML models and running out of memory lol. So I just slapped another stick on, and noticed I cannot physically access the first slot  the Stealth cooler would press against it.

Would this be fixed with a SWAP file? I have an SSD, only one partition. I never run out of ram though, multitasking like this it uses <8gb

EDIT: Trying again with a 5GB swapfile. Will report back.

EDIT 2: Still the same. As I’m using GNOME, if I press the Meta key with the game and browser running, it freezes for a second and then resumes opening.

A loaded question, really; not fixed directly, but not having swap space certainly adds to the likelihood of multiple failures going forward.

The one-partition-install, although it’s one of the default options, is seldom a practical choice; it’s fine when installing to a virtual machine, for example, but not ideal for real world use. Still, what’s done is done.

Having only one partition is not a barrier to creating swap space; you could simply resize your existing partition to accommodate a swap partition. Gparted can help in resizing partitions; preferably using it from a Live Installer DVD/USB.

At least as much as your RAM is the generally recommended amount of space to make available; and that is sound advice, though in practice, a lesser amount of allocated space can also be workable.

If you’re not confident with any of that, you might also consider using a swap file and possiblly zswap or zram rather than physical swap partition. This could be an advantage, as it means not needing to concern yourself with repartitioning your SSD.

See the ArchWiki articles for related information:

I hope this helps. Cheers.

Isn’t Zram only for swap in RAM? That’s how I used it.
Found this in regards to a swapfile on disk instead of a swap-partition: https://linuxize.com/post/create-a-linux-swap-file/

Right, haha. By fixed I meant that if your solution/process would be the same as making a SWAP file, and I’m lead to believe that with newer kernels that’s the case. I added a video to show the choppy display in the OP, if it’s needed.

I used this wiki to create a SWAP file and following the advice as I don’t use hibernation, I made it 5GB. And yeah, it’s silly to make only one partition.

Still, when multitasking I keep checking my system resources and never once was the newly formed swap used. I’ll try downgrading drivers now.

Just to clarify. I’m gaming on Manjaro, and using VMs on the side for older games. The current issue is with Manjaro, running Steam with Proton, I haven’t had any big problems with the VMs yet but I’ll follow your advice on those whenever I fix the freezing/stuttering.

That is what I was referring to, happens every time I use Spice.

Does this mean you are in a wayland session?
Have you tried using xorg/X11 ?
(you should be able to select from the login screen)

Newish things with oldish BIOS. If my search is correct you have updates available

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MPG-B550-GAMING-EDGE-WIFI/support

You might also check pretty much everything here

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gaming#Improving_performance

Out of left field I might also mention the max_map thing.
But that would be more of a problem on certain games only

Just finished downgrading drivers, tried: 545, 535, 470. With the first two the issue continued, with the last I coulnd’t even run the game. All of this while also having the SWAP file of 5gb, which I’ve never seen used in System Monitor.

I don’t have X11/Xorg in the login screen. Only Gnome or Gnome Classic. Will try updating BIOS now.

Hm.
There should be a “Gnome on Xorg” session to choose.
Maybe you are missing the xorg-xserver package?

We want wayland to work well, of course.
But nvidia has only recently begun to mostly play nice with it, and you need the latest drivers for that to work. Still there are some bugs… notably nvidia+xwayland (launching xorg windows in wayland session) is known to cause graphical glitches such as constant flashing.

And since wine is going to be an xorg (xwayland) window by default … you will likely be nipped by this in some form by any windoze software.

image

No idea tbh. Just found another clue, if the youtube video I’m playing on Firefox on the second monitor is not the main tab of that browser window, everything works mostly smoothly, there are a few hiccups still, but it’s way smoother than with the video running in the monitor. If it’s just the audio playing with a static page in front it works mostly fine.

Maybe it has to do with the difference in refresh rates/resolution/gpu drivers? Which is weird because I downgraded them but felt no changes.

Just upgraded, BIOS reset to Secure Boot on, couldn’t log in so I disabled it. Issue for another time I guess. Was able to login without issue and it’s still the same.

Should I have an X screen for each monitor? Right now there’s only “X Screen 0” with I believe is merging both monitors.

Current inxi, I made a Timeshift restore point to play around. Really useful stuff.

Also, this was used on another post to check if the user was on X11 or not, seems I’m on X11:

Is the Firefox you’re using a flatpak or other containerised version? If so, try removing that and install from the official repository; or, directly from Mozilla.

Will try, it’s the one that came preinstalled with the Manjaro Gnome iso.

EDIT: Before this, I played a video on mpv on the second screen while running the game on the primary monitor. That works fine, I also downloaded the brave-browser package using pacman, did the same and it works flawlessly. It seems to be an issue with just Firefox playing videos?

Sorry for wasting your time guys, and thank you very much for your help. I appreciate it a lot.

It never occurred to me that it could be Firefox. I don’t know where I read that it was the only browser that came with proper hardware acceleration so I just brushed it off.

This is the package I’m using, pacman installed.

Anyway, I don’t know whether to close the issue or not now. Switching browsers isn’t a problem for me but any idea on what could be causing this with Firefox?

Should I close it, soundofthunder really came in clutch.

Well, I’m not absolutely convinced that Firefox is to blame; but it could be, to an extent; you may just need to reset it (start afresh with a new Firefox profile). You could also try another browser for a few days and see how it performs in comparison.

I suggest Vivaldi (based on Chromium) which I use personally, along with Firefox. Vivaldi is available from the official repositories:

sudo pacman -S vivaldi

Whichever browser you use, make sure to install uBlock Origin, to keep the nasties at bay.

I’ll close it as my solution came with looking at Firefox, and I’ll try Vivaldi too(which looks really cool!).

On resetting Firefox, this was a fresh install so it should be a new user from the get go.

I’ll look around for issues people had with Firefox. And make another post if need be.

Thanks a lot guys!
