Resolution unsupported after log in

When trying to use the video-nvidia drivers, I get an unsupported resolution error after I log in.
Removing the drivers through TTY (Ctrl+ Alt + F3) and installing video-nvidia-470xx fixes the issue, but I’d like to fix the problem with the newer drivers if possible.

No you did not actually

Meaning you use the nouveau aka open source drivers.
Please share from terminal
mhwd -li
ls /etc/X11/*
and
cat /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf

Apologies for the confusing post.
In order to gain access to my desktop (and make the post) I had to remove the drivers as stated and at this point I collected the information.
I finally have some time to jump between installing and removing the drivers, so the following logs will make a little more sense. :man_bowing:

Please remove that kernel as is EOL = End OF Life.

Remove that driver, is interfering with the nvidia one.
Do this

Thanks for the prompt reply.

It seems like 5.17-x86_64 was a ghost entry, since I had removed it and it isn’t listed as an installed kernel. Followed the steps here to clean it up.

Will install drivers as suggested and report back.

After following the removal steps, I’m unable to reach the log in screen on video-nvidia drivers. It’s just a black screen instead.
Reverting to video-nvidia-470xx still works.

Supposing you are installing them with
sudo mhwd -i video-nvidia-470xx
and the driver is actually used, then you can continue using it. Not much beneficiary changes for GeForce GTX 960 between those drivers version … i have the same GPU.

Thanks for the assistance.

It seems like DXVK is no longer compatible with video-nvidia-470xx drivers, so I’m running into a lot of trouble running games that previously worked.
Anything else I might try to get the 500xx drivers to work?

I don’t game, so no idea about the DXVK compatibility of the video-nvidia-470xx drivers. I use the video-nvidia as i need CUDA for Blender, never had issues with any of the drivers tho.

In your case, while using the video-nvidia-470xx drivers, do you get a different entry in your /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf in this Section?

Compared to mine for example

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "LG Electronics"
    ModelName "LG Electronics W2253"

    VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
    Option "DPMS"
EndSection

But you are connecting via HDMI according to this

And to be honest i would switch to DVI-I-1 if i was you, especially because of this

To me there is something off about that cable compatibility …

As mentioned before, i also use early KMS, but that only helps with wayland when i want to test it.
Other than that, i use a fixed config for dual display, and it looks like this since forever:

I’ll replace the HDMI cable with a DVI-I-1 cable, but is there anything else I need to change or will it auto detect on restart?

I’ve changed the cable.

Still resolution unsupported?
It should be detected at the install of the drivers and when the config file is generated automatically.
By just changing the cable the file itself will not regenerate.
It can be taken also from Nvidia X Server Settings, but you need to access it, hence log into Desktop Session, and copy it from there.
By default Nvidia X Server settings will try to create /etc/X11/xorg.conf - but that is not ok to be present because Manjaro uses MHWD and needs to be in /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf - but you can Preview the Settings file and only copy that part …
Sometimes you can make use of nomodeset kernel boot parameter to boot without a config file, but it depends.

I’ve reinstalled my drivers to see whether that does the trick, but the output in /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf remains the same.

The preview through nvidia-settings is the following:

Section "Monitor"
    # HorizSync source: edid, VertRefresh source: edid
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "Unknown"
    ModelName "Dell SE2717H/HX"
    HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
    VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0
    Option "DPMS"
EndSection

So I just need to replace the monitor section in /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf with the above preview information?

I’ve also noticed a slight degradation of the image quality when switching to DVI. Think that’s the reason why I chose the HDMI cable.

Thanks for the help!
Copying the monitor information into the file worked. I was getting a frequency out of range error, since the screen can go up to 75hz (AMD FreeSync).

With the new drivers that is what has been giving me the out of sync error. It works at 75hz on the 470xx drivers for some reason though.

Is there a way of limiting the refresh rate?
When I remove the VGA to DVI cable, I get an out of sync error because the HDMI output auto selects 75hz. I’ve tried setting it in nvidia-settings, but it still defaults to 75hz.

Yes, if you look at my config, i have this values on my Screen Section:

That will set the refresh rate to 60 (in my case) and i can’t make mistakes later.
But probably your monitor is set from its menu to Auto …

That with an AMD GPU, but on Nvidia that is the G-Sync, but our GPU model does not support that, only the Sync to VBlank.

I’ve set the refresh rate to 60hz in nvidia-settings, but I still get out of sync when I remove the VGA cable. My /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf currently looks like:

# nvidia-settings: version 520.56.06

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 520.56.06

Would changing the VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0 to VertRefresh 56.0 - 60.0 remove the 75hz option?

I don’t suggest that because then you get into different issue. You can set for each port the fixed layout as you did for HDMI, as i did for my two monitors, and is not a problem that is not connected some monitor to that port.

Okay, thanks for all the help. :man_bowing:

If all works as you wanted, then all good!
Cheers!
