Removing Windows partitions from dual boot

Hello,

i’ve been trying and setting up Manjaro on my laptop for the last few days and decided to ditch Windows. I’m using this laptop for work and having set up most of the stuff like apache, local ssl, nodejs and ssh key saving in kwallet I’d rather not start fresh. I’d like to mention that I’m kinda new to linux so please bear with me :slight_smile:

I’ve also read that expanding/shrinking partition is not recommended. I have external HDD with 1TB ext4 partition so maybe I could use Clonezilla to clone /root and /home to external hdd then nuke the entire drive and restore the partitions? Would that work? Also I would probably would want to make /root a little bigger after wipe.

If so how should I go about it?

In general you have to do this:

  1. Create a BACKUP on another harddrive.
  2. Boot Manjaro Install Disk.
  3. Remove the Windows Partitions with gparted.
  4. Create a a new EFI-Partition at the beginning. (Fat32 + boot flag)
  5. Expand/Move the partitions as you like with gparted. (This could take a while).
  6. Then you need to reinstall grub. There is a howto on https://wiki.manjaro.org
  7. Important! Check the UUIDs of Partitions with blkid and in /etc/fstab. They have to be the same! (Or use lables instead)
  8. Now you should have a clean Linux System without Windows.

Hey @megavolt , thanks for the tips though too late as I have already started the process which I kinda messed up in the end :smiley:

I managed to create images from / and /home partitions but after wiping disk, installing manjaro and restoring one partition at a time I had an error during boot about hibernation error. Then I realized that I have also cloned /boot/efi :facepunch: which was overwritten while restoring so swap partition had different uuid.

I’ve tried some commands I found on the net to edit /etc/fstab and /etc/default/grub in chroot but I failed. So I had to start fresh :smiley: But I managed to restore partition images on external drive and transfer needed files, projects and dbs so in the end it worked out :slight_smile:
