Recovering Journal message on shutdown

After starting a regular shutdown (not forced, simply clicking on the Shutdown option in the application launcher), the following message is presented on the screen for some minutes:

/dev/sda2: recovering journal
/dev/sda2: clean, 521054/15613952, files, 11381735/62435619 blocks

Before the shutdown completes. On the next startup, I will briefly see the second line appear on screen before startup process continues. What could be causing this? Searching the forum didn’t give me any relevant posts.

Hi @asorel,

The message is from the fsck module in the startup and shutdown hooks.

I’d say yours isn’t a worry as is specifiees /dev/sda2: clean...

If anyone knows else, feel free to correct me.

Anyway, hope this helps!

If nothing adverse is happening, then why is fsck displaying the message at all? This isn’t something I’ve seen previously, which would imply something about my system has changed, leading to these messages being displayed.

The only thing that may have changed is the verbosity level of systemd.

AFAIK previously fsck wasn’t enabled by default. I had to turn mine on specifically. Not that I was looking for it. Just saw it somewhere and thought it was a good idea.

So, as @Aragorn, possibly the verbosity of systemd changed, or the hook got enabled by default with the last update.

@Mirdarthos @Aragorn Thank you for your replies. Should I be worried about the long shutdown time at all? My system stays on that screen for at least two minutes before the shutdown process is complete, which seems abnormally long.

Personally, I wouldn’t worry. It feels long for me too. But I’m used to it by now. I shut it down and buzz off, leaving it to do it’s own thing.
