Recent update seems to have broken sound (dummy output)

After a recent update, my sound has broken. No idea what has caused it. I have tried reinstalling pipewire and manjaro-pipewire to clear any conflicts to no luck
edit: and pipewire-pulse + reboot
Here is my alsa info link

Choose a sound profile in pavucontrol. Dummy Output means here: no profile chosen.

Yeah I would but…
I definitely have devices plugged in
my webcam, USB mic with audio output etc…

My bluetooth headphones refuse to connect.

additionally, my configuration menu has no available options

Remember what you have modified before the update. For example:

is an indicator that you have tinkered with gpu passthrough. Problems like this don’t just happen because you update. I can also only guess what it could be.

ah yeah, I was fiddling with getting a windows VM, this was a while before the update though, so I doubt thats the culprit. Could have been indirect though.

Besides, I don’t see how that would be relevant to the issue. If this is just one of those things that can’t be fixed without a re-install I am happy to do so, but I am not particularly pleased with the idea that might be necessary

I did install flatpak and flathub, but never used it to install anything.

Yeah, there are always people who tinker their system, do an update and et viola something is broken: The update did that! - Sorry, but I read that numerous of times and it repeats.

Share please:

pactl list cards

Devices and drivers seems to be ok. Probaby just try to create new account and test the sound there. I have a feeling that it configuration depended.

pactl list cards comes up with nothing.

Made a new user and sound works perfectly, bluetooth included. Now to figure out what I need to do to reset my account specifically around sound.

Edit:

I checked the console output on the other account. here is the console output

Someone mentioned in some other thread after that big update, that one should remove the cache directory: /home/<username>/.cache from a TTY.
Perhaps try that?
I suppose you could always rename it and not remove it, in case something else go berserk.

that seems dangerous, it looks like it holds a bunch of data for yay and other things. I will back it up first

edit: that did nothing. still no audio outputs available.

I am so embaressed, I fixed it but I have no clue why. I started deleting things related to pipewire, wireplumber and pulseaudio in my /home// folder that looked like it would be the culprit. Would have been too much effort to restart after every change but it is fixed now. I have some suspects but nothing concrete.

I was tinkering with my bluetooth headphones settings and ended up making a file in ~/.config/wireplumber/wireplumber.conf.d/50-bluez.conf about 3 weeks ago but never did anything with it so it was blank. This is super specific and I doubt anyone will end up doing this, but here is my issue if this helps anyone XD.

Thanks all for the assistance <3. I doubt anyone would have figured this out, and this might not have even been the problem.

It shouldn’t be, since all the directory contains is cached data which different pieces of software you have installed create for their own needs. Next time you start/use them, the cache each of them had created, is recreated. So, it may take a few moments extra to start the program but that should be all. My comment about renaming it is to be safe, as we say where I live: use braces and a belt.

This solved a small issue for me regarding settings for the Task Manager, but it is still slightly buggy when used as floating. That’s why I mentioned it.

Glad you solved it. 8)
