Reboot and shutdown issues

Hi! I’m having problem with both testing and unstable branches on my notebook (Acer Nitro AN515-45 - AMD CPU). When I try to shut down the system, it goes all the way to unmounting root fs cleanly and says it is powering down, but the power doesn’t actually turn off. Same problem with reboot - reboot gets stuck at the same phase.
The problem does not happen when switching back to stable. I also tried LTS kernel instead of the latest stable one and problem is still present on the testing branch.

The minimum amount of useful information to help with this, would be the logs as your are shutting down.

You can even filter logs by the last time you powered up.

journalctl --list-boots

If it hung up the previous boot, you can use boot ID -1.

Then all the logs (in reverse) would be shown with the command:

journalctl --boot -1 --reverse

You can add --priority 3 to see only errors or worse, 4 for warnings..

Where does it get hung up?

In addition to logs as mentioned, more detail about your system may be helpful to identify other possible contributors.

Please provide your system information as described (below).

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

Note: By virtue of using the Manjaro forum you acknowledge and agree to follow Rules and Guidelines outlined; so, you really should read them:

Be prepared to provide output from commands when asked. It is equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Simply waiting for others to ask you questions can be counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – instead, please help others to make informed suggestions based on information you provide.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

a) inxi command (long-form):

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

b) inxi command (short-form):

inxi -zv8

Running inxi within a chroot environment :eyes:

  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

Hi! Attaching a full journal log and inxi output from a boot that failed to shutdown (switched back to unstable, updated to latest packages, and disabled SDDM to produce minimal log).

Update: Through some experiments I discovered two workarounds that considerably narrow down the suspects.

Things I tried that did resolve the issue:

  • Removing the kernel cmdline argument fbcon=map:01 avoids the issue (I used this in the past to be able to work in console using a secondary monitor, which needs a passthrough through dedicated Nvidia GPU to work).
  • Never plugging in a secondary monitor during the whole uptime of the computer also avoids the issue. Plugging it in after completing boot and removing it before shutdown, if even for a second, does trigger the issue, however.

Things I tried that did not resolve the issue:

  • Exchanging linux617-nvidia-open for nvidia-open-dkms
  • Exchanging nvidia-open-dkms for nvidia-dkms
  • Using older kernel patch version with the dkms Nvidia modules

When I have time for more testing again, I plan on downgrading only the Nvidia drivers themselves to see if that helps or not.

This is actually a good sign. The fcon map notation is weird..

fbcon=map:01 means:

  • tty1 → fb0
  • tty2 → fb1

I think it would be worth trying: fbcon=map:10

Maybe the frame buffer device numbers flipped them in the new kernels for some reason.

Otherwise..

I don’t use LUKS, is this normal for you? But this looks like it would be a concern to me.

The beauty of -r / --reverse it should have all the log entries right before it hangs. Sometimes info log messages can give hints into what to troubleshoot, even though they aren’t warnings or errors.

And with just seeing warnings, you can’t even tell when you initiated the shutdown.
