Dear friends, I have an ntfs sata disk, used for data (sda1). my system is dual boot manjaro/win 10.
Yesterday I discovered I cannot write into the disk while in manjaro (can when in Win).
Cannot change ownership (chown), and cannot change permissions (sudo chmod -R +rw .
trying the latter, I get recursive messages that the file system is read-only.
I also tried changing the mounting point, to no avail.
My fstab line looks like this:
“/dev/disk/by-uuid/15DBE4263A439D94 /mnt/sda1 auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0”
but I have also tried this:
“UUID=15DBE4263A439D94 /home/oren/sata ntfs-3g auto,nofail,uid=1000,gid=1000,utf8,umask=022,defaults 0 0”
As this is a data drive, I have backed up everything, so I can tinker with the drive with no risk.
Does anyone have an idea?
thank you very very much
Oren

Hi @oren,

That is to be expected with NTFS, IIRC. Because NTFS doesn’t support these things and is implemented virtually. Nevertheless, they look like everything’s normal to you, the user.

You should check the drive for any errors:

sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda

You may have to disable hibernation in Windofs

You can find similar posts allover the forum
Please search for “ntfs”

Thank you very much for your response!
The above is the output of sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda1

Well, there are errors, but I don’t know how serious they are, because:

So, lets perform a short SMART test:

sudo smartctl -t short /dev/sda

Edit:

Followed by providing the output of:

sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda

…again, please.

Dear Mirdarthos,

the test does not go beyond it’s initial phase:

Thank you very much Andreas85. I will try that

Thank you megavolt:
This is what <mount -v> returns:

/dev/sdb1 on /run/media/oren/Backup type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other,blksize=4096,uhelper=udisks2)

OK, so it all looks good to me, although I admit to not being an expert.

If you’ve got Windows there, boot into Windows and shutdown. But make 100% sure you don’t have quick shutdown (I think there’s something like that) or fastboot enabled. Also be sure not to hibernate.

See what happens then and report back.

OK. I will. Thanks again

Eliminating Hibernate and fast startup in Windows fixed the problem.
Thank you Andreas 85, Mirdarthos and megavolt

Thank you again Mirdarthos. All is well after disabling hibernate and fast startup in Windows

Just warning your disk seems to be on the way to die from what I see, It seems to be damaged by the smart data of course there can be errors in the smartdata itself but myself I wouldn’t use that disk anymore, of course it can kinda work another x of years but there is higher chance you will slowly lose data and one day bang and you won’t be able to read anything from it

Woah! Thank you very much for pointing this out to me.
First, I will make sure to maintain a good backup plan.
Is there something I can do to monitor / prevent / delay this?

I would probably recommend to setup some notification system so you see when the disk is reporting errors, something like this S.M.A.R.T. - ArchWiki
There is a tutorial how to make it show the problems as notification on desktop, if you need further help setting this up you can tell me I will try to write a list of commands you need to execute to make it work

Also you could run extended self-test which is long test that has way higher chance to show the problems with the disk but it also runs quite long time
“sudo smartctl --test long /dev/sda”
The short test does very little so it misses most of the stuff and even through it was a small test it showed read failure

# 1 Short offline Completed: read failure 90% 9141 187237312

Perfect! Thank you very much, Arisa!

I am not sure if that was you but don’t mark my response as solution as it’s not a solution to the problem in title, I will set the Solution back to the original solution message from Mirdarthos, if you need further help I think best would be to create new thread so it’s kept as separate issues
