Random System freezes in fresh installations

I have freshly installed manjaro in my system . i am new to linux . I get random system freezes which require a full hard reset .I have tried reinstalling the os 2 times but the problem remains .
the cpu usage and ram usage is quite low and swap is empty . i tried several solutions but to no avail .

Can you give some hardware and system info ?
inxi -Fza or similar.

I dont think it can be hardware related as it functions quite smoothly for quite a long time and i have also tried changing my kernel but it made it only worse.

On my system by default was installed close drivers (video-linux) and i have sudden restarts , and when i close my pc one fan still works.
Now i had disabled and 5 days without restarts.
I hope this solve your issue.

Next time freezes run the follow command

sudo dmesg -l emerg ,alert, crit, err, warn
and post the terminal output

upgrading to kernel 5.9 seems to have fixed the problem . no freezes for 2 days . But i will see it for a few days and if it doesn’t happen again ,I will mark this as solved .

I faced two severe freezes … once i only increased the brightness and the other time i was playing csgo . I have tried putting the system on performance mode … updated the system , updated the kernel … I tried the dmesg but i doesnt show anything . What can i do ?

I think i have found the problem , I believe it is due to " the c-state bug" of my processor .
I found the freeze was not limited to the graphical interface but also affects the OS and hardware . The workaround proposed was adding “intel_idle.max_cstate=1” to the boot parameters . Will this effect my system negatively in anyway ? or is there a better solution to this . I cant say for sure , that’s why i will be running this machine 24 hrs to see if it freezes again.
for now the uptime is longer .

no, because what you`re doing there is setting idle core to max speed at all time, you will lose some battery of course but will earn speed

So you mean it can fix my issues for trading my battery consumption .
If it is so I am more than happy . Because i will have a workable system .

Using this parameter will not only have your battery life reduced, but will also have your CPU hotter all the time, because it will not be able to idle anymore (and reduce its clock and power consumption).
There is maybe another parameter that could help your, I wouldn’t run this parameter for the sake of hardware lifespan.

//EDIT: did you try running an OLDER kernel instead of latest? In theory the bug you’re referring to should be fixed (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=193011 or https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051 have reference to your CPU in the comments) long time ago, maybe it is present in latest kernel but not the kernel current to when this bug was fixed (4.19 or 5.4 I think)?

Also maybe a less aggressive cstate kernel parameter could be used to have some kind of possible idling?

Maybe the BIOS have some settings that can mitigate the issue?

Thanks for your reply and yes i tried the older kernels and they are far worse where 10 mins without a freeze would be wonders . I heard also “intel_idle.max_cstate=2” does the job too . But i havent tested it yet . currently i am using cstate=1 and have not experienced a single freeze also the os is working a little faster . I will check the given links by you . So should using cstate=2 be better than =1 ??

Note I am using max cstate=2 i will see and furthur report .

Yep you need to test for yourself, there is no answer possible but testing the parameter. Same for the BIOS only someone with the same BIOS could tell you what to look at or modify if possible. The links I gave are just bug reports/fix at kernel.org.

Thanks for your help man . Ye i am using cstate=2 and the problem seems just gone .
The bios setting is quite limited and nothing much related to the cpu only the basic settings since it’s a 4-5 year old budget laptop . I will continue testing and mark it as solved if it doesn’t happen again . The unit is currently up for more than 5 hrs in cstate=2 . Also i saw many forums but most of them are pointing this parameter as the only workaround . Cheers !!

i am using cstate=2 as my parameter. And my problem is solved . I cannot anything else as a workaround .

This is still very limiting, probably almost similar to cstate 1 I think. Whatever works for you but as said, without going to some sort of idling it will run hotter, reduce hardware lifespan (especially battery).
