Random logouts in Gnome

Hello, for some reason I randomly get logged out by Manjaro. This, although not too often (happened to me around 3 times over the course of 1 month), has been pretty annoying. I am using gnome 40 (having been experiencing this in 3.38 too). I am also up to date regarding packages and I am using the latest recommended kernel (510). Anyone else experiencing this or know of a way to troubleshoot it? I don’t see any patterns in what I’ve done that could cause this.

Hi, please provide the output of:

  • echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
  • gsettings get org.gnome.shell enabled-extensions

I’m not on Gnome any more but 5 or so years ago, hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del (or Ctrl+Alt+Backspace?) used to be the “Log out of Gnome” key combination.

Coming home to a Linux system from a Windows system at work, I used to have that too until I disabled that.

Yeah I thought I might have hit the short cut to log out on accident but it doesn’t seem like it (its happened again since the original post). The key combinations you’re saying is right, but in the last time it happened I was merely closing windows with Alt + F4.

  1. Does this also happen when you create a new user and log in there? (E.G. uniext2 )
  2. If yes, next time it happens,
    • switch to TTY2 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2

    • log in there

    • Execute:

      journalctl --system --boot=0 --priority=3 | tail --lines=50

    • Provide the output here.

:crossed_fingers:

I am not able to have it happen at will, it just happens at random times when I am using the laptop (not when it is just being left on). It just happened now so I will paste the output:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ » journalctl --system --boot=0 --priority=3 | tail --lines=50

This is the reason why you get logged out. If Wayland crashes it takes the whole desktop with it. You can select the x11 session on the GMD login screen to avoid that.

This is a ton of enabled extensions and most likely one of them is the root cause for your crashes. You can either disable all extensions, or do so one by one to find the extension causing your crashes.

Oh, that makes sense. I’ll disable a few of them at a time till I find the specific one. Thanks for the help.

Disabled each and everyone of them at a time and seems like none of them are the cause. And the weird part is its happening more often. Anything else I could try?

Try disabling all extensions individually, then logout and log back in if you haven’t already.

Before, when I was talking about disabling extensions I meant that I disabled a few, and waited for it to happen, and when it did I ruled out the extensions I disabled. I did this for every extension but yet it is still happening. I didn’t know logging out mattered so I’ll try that now.

Yes, it can. I had a conflict between Pop Shell and Dash to Dock that even involved Conky and couldn’t figure it out until I did that. The issue was eventually fixed because I submitted a bug report with my findings.
