Random crashes to black screen

My computer has been crashing completely randomly for a while now. It was once from time to time but now it’s crashing more and more and is getting really annoying. For example, some times, I can use my computer for an entire weekend without any hitch and other times it can crash six times in half an hour. It already crashed two times while writing this post.

When the crash occurs, the screen freezes but I can still use the mouse (can’t click anything) and the sound still works (For example, if I’m watching a movie or playing a game, the sounds continue without a hitch.). Then, after a few seconds, everything turns to black, with the sound still working. At some point the keyboard becomes unresponsive, I can’t even use caplock and the fans on the video card stops as if the card isn’t in use. I can’t go to a TTY so I can’t reboot the computer safely, I have to press the reset button. I’ve checked the video card temperature and it is normal.

I have searched a lot and found no answers that fixes my problem. Some people suggested changing the kernel version, I’ve tried 5.10.102-1, 5.15.25-1, 5.16.11-2 and I am now on 5.17rc5.220225.g3c789a1-1 (experimental). None of those had any effect. It was suggested to me to update my graphic drivers but since I use an AMD card, the drivers are included in the kernel I believe.

I also found a post saying to use a script with a keybind to reset the display with xrandr during a crash but that didn’t work either.

I’m really at a loss here. I would really appreciate it if someone could help diagnose this problem with me.

Try a BIOS update https://www.asus.com/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/PRIME/PRIME-X470-PRO/HelpDesk_BIOS/

Also, it seems your

has some issues

Could be a partition table issue. Copy your data from it elsewhere and create a new partition table on it.

This issue has been following me for a while now. I have updated the BIOS several times in the past without any change… or actually getting worse. That’s one reason I’ve stopped updating the BIOS. But I’ll try updating it to the last version.

Yeah… I have known for a while now… I need another drive to transfer everything and the problem is that where I am it’s difficult to put my hand on a new drive.
Do you think that could be the cause of the crashes?

I’d first exclude a hardware problem. Try to launch a different OS, or a live image with a different DE and see if it still happens. Also try to run memtest to exclude a ram problem.

I had tried different OSes but the problem was still there, sometimes a bit different. Same with different DEs. Memtest passed with flying colors.

It seems this was the answer after all. I haven’t had a crash in two days now. Which is weird because I had updated my BIOS at least four times, except for the last one and there was no improvement whatsoever. That’s why I had skipped the last one.

Thanks to all who helped!
