Random crashes, programs not responding

Dear all,

First post here, I hope the problem is clear enough and we’ll find the issue.

I freshly installed Manjaro last week on my computer, with i3wm.

What happens:
It becomes very slow, the applications start to crash. Commands are not answering anymore (Run command, shortcut to start a new terminal etc.)
I can go to another tty but cannot log-in, it does not respond, gets very slow.

If a terminal is still open, no command answers, as the system answer it does not know the commands I type (unfound) even for reboot, journalctl, vim etc.

Overall my only issue is the hard reset.

When does it happen:
A few time while I use the computer, and often, almost always, after letting it on idle for a time, or in sleep, suspend mode.
It also happened a few times when plugging or unplugging the compiuter.

I really suspected the power manager for this reason.

Here is the output for my system info

I suspected something I run at the boot of the computer.

As my terminal (terminator) does not show transparent background, which it should, I run the line “picom -b -c”, which resolves the mentioned problem, but seems to randomly be linked with the cause.
If I remove it, the issue still happens, but way less frequently.

Here is a piece of my current config file:

# i3 config file (v4)
# Please see http://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html for a complete reference!
#Run boot:
exec --no-startup-id xrandr -s 2560x1600
exec --no-startup-id volumeicon
exec --no-startup-id nitrogen /usr/share/backgrounds/1228050.jpg --set-scaled
exec --no-startup-id xbacklight 1
#exec --no-startup-id picom -b -c
# Lock screen
bindsym $mod+9 exec --no-startup-id blurlock
# Autostart applications
exec --no-startup-id /usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
#wallpaper at first: exec --no-startup-id nitrogen --restore; sleep 1; picom -b
exec --no-startup-id manjaro-hello
exec --no-startup-id nm-applet
exec --no-startup-id xfce4-power-manager
exec --no-startup-id pamac-tray
exec --no-startup-id clipit
# exec --no-startup-id blueman-applet
# exec_always --no-startup-id sbxkb
exec --no-startup-id start_conky_maia
# exec --no-startup-id start_conky_green
# exec --no-startup-id xautolock -time 10 -locker blurlock
exec_always --no-startup-id ff-theme-util
exec_always --no-startup-id fix_xcursor
}

I considered the issue to be linked with the drivers of the graphic cards, particularly as this bug also show weird colors on the screen, like greenish lines. I uninstalled all the pilots and installed back the xf86-vide-intel ones.

I also suspected the power management as it was at first related to the sleeping mode.

I read multiple articles and posts about it but nothing convincing.

Nothing works so far.

Can you try a more recent kernel: 6.1.
Your computer has a modern CPU.

see this

Hello,

Thank you for tips! I did the upgrade:

mhwd-kernel -li  :heavy_check_mark:
Currently running: 6.1.1-1-MANJARO (linux61)
The following kernels are installed in your system:

  • linux515
  • linux61
    <

I could run 6.1.1 thanks to Stephane link to the post with ibt=off, as I had the same issue as the others when booting.

However, my main issue is not resolved.

It bugged again a few minutes ago, after an hour with the new Kernel. I did not unplug the computer, I was using it. It simply started to bug slowly. Steps:

  • I could not write in my brave browser anymore
  • I could not click on the windows.
  • I could first open a terminal, but the commands were not recognized
  • I could not open any more terminal
  • Programs closed by themselves
  • Cannot do anything. I tried changing TTY, no succed, I had to hard reset the computer.

The crash occurred at about 13:36.

I am trying to read out other elements related to it. I could try the kernel 6.0. but since the exact same thing happened with the older version I am not sure it makes much sense.

FYI, I managed to get a screenshot of the graphic bug that appears punctually, it tends to crash after that. The web browser disappears but sometimes appear like this. No error appear though and I cannot find many information so far on the forum. I wonder if it might be related. I re-installed the GPU drivers just in case.

format the logs properly, they are a mess…
but you have some i915 logs there, which are related to igpu…
try adding these parameters:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
and in this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT - inside the quotes add these parameters:

i915.edp_vswing=2 i915.enable_psr=0

dont remove anything from there, just add them to the existing parameters, save the file with ctrl+x, update grub with:
sudo update-grub
reboot and test

I suggest you update BIOS to latest version - Dell XPS 15 9510 System BIOS v1.16.0

I tried to make it look more clean. Here we have only the errors and the boots. The boots were following the crash (hard reset always)

It was ok for most of the day then it crashed again.

At the boot I always get the following errors, which I am trying to investigate.

I focused a bit more on the first error called dell_smm_hwmon: unable to get SMM Dell Signature and found couple of posts including:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=281125

I made sure to remove the intel drivers to keep only the nouveau, and made replacements in the grub files. Still not success.
Overall, this is linked to the fan and I have a few BIOS messages about the fan appearing. I will dismount the computer to check if I do not have a faulty contact tomorrow morning.

EDIT: With the update of the BIOS, the bug still persists.

Hi. I see you have quoted my thread as a similar issue, although there are some differences, and my issue was probably caused by my encrypted drive. In my case either upgrading the kernel, or the solution that involves changing GRUB config worked. (probably latter). I cannot include links yet unfortunately -.- but you can find it on the first related post.

Update here:

I have the latest BIOS vesrions, latest Kernel version, applied the above points for me grub file:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“quiet apparmor=1 security=apparmor udev.log_priority=3 ibt=off i915.edp_vswing=2 i915.enable_psr=0”

I tried many different configuration, also to put the modeset of the drivers to 0. I have less crashes overall, but still the exact same thing happen.

I reviewed again my graphic drivers, not from the manjaro installer but manually and made a clean install (I use the “nouveau” drivers only) as the other ones seem to have some issues with recent Hardware.

Here is the current output for the drivers:

I do not have a particular error in the journalctl.
The computer is like lagging, then none of the shortcuts like open terminal etc. work. I cannot put in sleep more with the start button (permission denied), none of the normal command in the terminal are known (Not found).

The latest errors:

this is probably because you are running on nouveau drivers, instead of the nvidia ones…
and the mhwd output shows, only what drivers are available for install… if you want to check what drivers you have installed run:
mhwd -li
it would be worth a try to run only on nvidia gpu, maybe it will help…
also do you have issues also in the live usb?
it could be also because you are using i3wm?

The issue persisted with the different drivers:
video-linux, video-nvidia, video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime.

I am rejecting it as an issue for now.
I will try to run with a live USB and see if it keeps happening, who knows…
The i3wm was the official install by Manjaro. It might be related, or X11? I am not sure how to diagnose these properly.

Have you taken a look through these:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dell_XPS_15_(9510)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA_Optimus#Available_methods
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hybrid_graphics#Fully_power_down_discrete_GPU

The BIOS part yep, no choice otherwise it would not boot.

For the remaining part, I installed Manjaro i3 config directly.
I focused mostly on Manjaro’s forum, even if I am considering making a fresh install with Arch, forgetting about Manjaro. Manjaro was supposed to make it easier to install, but if it goes with some stuff not compatible it is more of a headache to check it all.

I am currently following some of the subtilities in the links you gave me, to see if a parameter is wrong but so far nothing particular.

I would really need to find a way to see what triggers the bug, what error…

Hello,

Here is an update:

  • I tried to check many packages installed but it was very long. I decided to do a fresh install.
  • After a fresh install, the problem occured again multiple times.
  • I decided to go from something “cleaner” and fresh installed archlinux.

The issue occured only after a few days. I made a thread on the arch forum and it seems solved for now.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=2080704#p2080704

I modified a kernel parameter with the following input:

nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0 iommu=soft

Also, I realised the error happened with “volumeicon” multiple times.
=> Everytime I had it in my .xinitrc, my system would boot but startx would fail to a black screen
=> A few times at the moment I would execute it, or slightly after.
In everycases, volumeicon was installed and in use. I had it installed on archlinux a bit before the bug happened, and it comes natively with Manjaro.

I did not try to solve what fails with this package, I just made my own script for the volume.

Thank you all again for your inputs. I hope it helps someone else in a similar situation.
