Random and unexplained total freeezes

Hello people,

I’ve been having random system freezes for about three months now, and I can’t troubleshoot them for the life of me.

There does not seem to be a pattern : it can happen when the PC is idle, running a game, browsing the net, etc…

When it happens, there is no coming back from it : no restarting X, shifting to another tty or even raising the elephant. The only solution is a hardware shutdown.

I’ve tried looking into dmesg and Xorg.0.log but this has been pretty uninformative. If you have advices as to where to look for answers, I’ll gladly take it.

I suspected either a RAM or driver problem. I ran several memtests without errors and tried booting with each of my individual RAM sticks but eventually the freeze came back.

If it is a driver problem, I don’t know where to look or what to do. My kernel is up to date but the freeze happened for the last several minor versions.

Here are some informations about my system :

Thank you for reading ! I’ll galdly take any tip

Welcome to the forum!

Well, your hardware, while not ancient, isn’t exactly the newest, and the big Achilles heel of your system is the fact that you’ve got an Nvidia graphics adapter, with the proprietary nvidia driver powering it, in combination with a still cutting-edge kernel.

Now, due to the proprietary nature of the nvidia driver, it is impossible to diagnose the problem, and it is most certainly a kernel-level problem if the skinny elephants don’t work anymore. My advice would therefore be to install the 5.4 LTS kernel ─ it will also pick the correct nvidia driver for you ─ and see what gives.

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux54

:crossed_fingers:

can you update your bios ?

Had the exact same issue with 5.8.x kernels.
Very likely the cause.

Thank you all for your answers. I shall downgrade to 5.4 and upgrade my BIOS if there’s no improvement.

As a first step, I would also recommend installing and using the 5.4.x LTS Kernel.

A journalctl log when it freeze would possible show something more specific.
For example after freeze, reboot and journalctl -b-1 and look at end of log.

Thank you @anon77807029 for the writeup.

Unfortunately I can reproduce my issue with 5.4.65. I’ll try a few variations or even older kernels later.
There are no NVRM errors in my journal (just the line stating the NVIDIA module is being loaded).

I’ll also try to upgrade my BIOS to see if that changes anything, and temporarily switching to nouveau to see if it’s really linked to NVIDIA proprietary drivers (I’d happily stick with nouveau if not for the huge performance loss)

What PSU do you have in your computer?

can you provide

sudo journalctl -p 3 -xb

I can reproduce the issue with nouveau, so this is not proprietary-NVIDIA specific and I’m beginning to wonder if it even has to do with the graphic card.

@Keruskerfuerst I have this PSU (in French, did not find an English page for it). Here are the relevant electrical ratings :

Total Power : 550W
DC Output | Max. load | Max. combined
3.3V 20A 100W
  5V 20A 100W
 12V 45A 540W
m12V 0.3A 3.6W
5VSB 2.5A 12.5W

@stephane Here you go, output for the last boot leading to a freeze. The last two errors are 10 minutes before the freeze but this should be incidental to the problem as the errors do not show up in earlier frozen boot entries.

use linux5.4 lts or 4.19 lts
you have a haswell cpu since 5.7 they have many freeze ( maybe coming form microcode )

see also for update your bios

I have to pitch in as I also have the same exact issue. I’ve been on a test run on Windows since Friday and today is Tuesday. Haven’t had a single freeze here. My Manjaro installation would freeze very frequently and sometimes multiple times a day.

I also noticed that my audio kept popping randomly on Manjaro?

So I continued testing : the freeze happens on 5.4 LTS (as stated previously) AND 4.19 LTS. It’s difficult to say but it may be less frequent than for bleeding-edge kernels. (@stephane)

Next step : updating the bios, but I have not a lot of hope.

@GottaSlay Interesting. I don’t have that popping audio thing tho. Do you have the same motherboard as me ?

I do have an Asus motherboard but mine is from B450 series. I’m not 100% certain yet but I might’ve fixed it in my case by switching to Manjaro’s own 5.8 kernel. Before that I was using a TKG-PDS kernel.

Okay, here’s an update. The problems are still happening. I did the following :

  • enabled SysRq and tried REISUB’ing upon freeze : no effect
  • upgrading my BIOS
  • tried Linux 5.4 LTS and 4.19 LTS
  • tried with nouveau driver
  • tried with different versions of NVIDIA proprietary drivers (440 and 450)
  • tried to analyze the various logs before the crash : nothing of interest
  • did a memtest
  • tried switching out different RAM sticks to isolate any malfunction

In all of those cases, at some point the the PC froze again. I’m really at my wit’s end here. Any other ideas ?

Add to /etc/default/grub and at Line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= [your current options] pcie_aspm=off intel_idle.max_cstate=1 & if you current use nvidia run sudo nvidia-smi -pm 1
(I’m confused if your are using nvidia [nvidia v440.100] or nouveau[alternate nouveau,
systemd-modules-load[245]: Failed to find module ‘nvidia’] -if you use nvidia u must block nouveau, maybe better to try a clean install for GPU driver of your choice - /etc/modules-load.d/ & /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d -)

Thanks @janisx for the suggestion. I currently use nvidia 450 (so nouveau is blocked as expected). The journal you refer to was when I tried nouveau (and got the freeze anyway).

I tried your suggestion. Unfortunately the freeze just happened again. Here are my up to date system informations

I think I finally have the solution. I had a hunch and removed my WiFi card (which is very old). It has been a few days and I think the problem went away.

It was either a hardware problem in the card or a driver problem for it.
