"Raft" Game not Running Through Steam (Proton, Vulkan, Steamplay, etc.)

What I’m trying to do:
I am trying to run a Windows-only game called Raft (steam id: 648800) on Manjaro Linux Xfce. I have enabled steamplay for all titles on Steam, and set Proton to the newest version. According to ProtonDB, this game should work perfectly (Platinum)

What is going wrong:
When I open up the game, I get an error screen with a red exclamation mark. (I have a screenshot with id OudR61A on imgur). The game then shuts off.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my graphics drivers, and adding “WINEDLLOVERRIDES=dxgi=n” to the launch options for Raft in Steam.

I found a Reddit post on r/linux_gaming by u/gn0gs titled " Raft not running on Manjaro OS through Steam." The OP has the same problem as me, and claims that their problem was solved by a Manjaro forum post on this site with “/t/problem-with-vulkan-on-manjaro/95965” in the url. However, I get the message “Oops! That page doesn’t exist or is private.” when I try to visit that page.

I suspect that the line “MESA-INTEL: warning: Haswell Vulkan support is incomplete” in vulkaninfo has to do with the source of the problem, but my web searches are bringing nothing.

Can anybody point me in the right direction to fix this problem? Thank you very much for taking the time to read this post

Try removing modesetting, reinstalling the Intel driver and rebooting. Make note of the output if it does not succeed and post it here:

sudo mhwd -r pci video-modesetting
sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

Hardware is not my forte, I assume I phrased that wrong. Here’s what I did earlier:

edit: This is what I did before making the initial post, this is not in reponse to the above poster

  • I went to Manjaro Settings Manager > Hardware Configuration and saw:
    (rough gui recreation)
                                 installed
video-linux                        (yes)
video-modesetting                  (no)
video-vesa                         (no)

Then I right clicked on video-modesetting and clicked install and then did the same for video-vesa. I’m not sure why I did this in retrospect; I was desperate for a solution. I got up from the computer and then came back later, and my screen just showed a blinking cursor on a black screen. When I reset the computer, it would just bring me back to the black screen with blinking cursor.

I pressed CTRL-ALT-F2 to get into the tty console and then I ran

mhwd

to list them

sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux
sudo mhwd -r pci video-modesetting
sudo mhwd -r pci video-vesa

to remove all of them, and then

sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300
reboot

and I was able to get back into Manjaro

Fast forward to the present:

When I tried to run

sudo mhwd -r pci video-modesetting

The console responds

Error: config 'video-modesetting' is not installed!

Running

sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

the console responds

edit to make this bit more clear: I can’t uninstall modesetting because it’s already uninstalled, and I can’t install the default drivers because I already did that earlier. This isn’t the source of the problem

Yeah … dont touch vesa unless you really really think you should. It is a ‘generic’ driver of sorts … its OK to be available as some sort of fallback - but generally installing it breaks things on otherwise reasonable systems.

Back to your driver headaches … maybe, even if it doesnt reflect exactly your issue, you should see this (and pay attention to the force options)

Let me explain: The whole modesetting and vesa bit happened well before I made this post; I just explained to demonstrate what I already tried. As I said, I reinstalled the default settings and everything was working on that end, before making this post. That whole ordeal was simply a detraction from the problem I’m having.

The above poster told me to uninstall modesetting and restore default settings, which I already did before making the initial post, which is why it didn’t run. I couldn’t uninstall modesetting because it was already uninstalled, and I couldn’t reinstall the default settings because they are already there. My ability to uninstall / install the driver settings is fine; this is not the source of my problem.

Try to turn off and turn on the computer, if it fails, uninstall and reinstall steam and it should help me :slight_smile:

That GPU doesn’t support Vulkan properly,so it can fail launching games with Vulkan,what you can do is to force Proton to use OpenGL instead of Vulkan,but keep in mind that performance can not be great on demanding games.

In Steam,right click on the game › properties and in launch options type

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

With that the game should start now.
