Questions about tor, after downloading it from their website

i’ve downloaded tor from the tor website… at the end i figured out how to run it…
but i still have questions…

  1. do i need to check for new versions on the tor website or will it update itself when there are updates?

  2. is there easier way to run tor instead of running the start-tor-browser file from the file manager?

  3. the console that is opened with tor mandatory?

Install Brave Browser. You can use it for everyday browsing and also has an option to start a new window with Tor.

i do have brave…
i will consider it… thanks!

The browser will check for new versions and alert you to update. (A little update ball in the hamburgermenu) The update check can be run manually in the tor browser settings.

Make a .desktop file for it, or install the torbrowser-launcher from the repo, this will create a icon in the application menu.

What kind of console is run with it? There is the browserconsole, there could be a tor deamon console running, or are you seeing something else?

when i opened tor there was a console window running…
i don’t really know…
i think i will stick to Brave’s tor for now…

btw… the tor from the repo stopped working after each update and i could not solve it for good even tho i’ve tried things suggested on the internet…

There is no Tor Browser package in the official Manjaro repositories; there is only the torbrowser-launcher.

You must have installed tor-browser-bin via the AUR.

One of the requirements of installing software via the AUR is that you should re-build that package after every update; in this case:

pamac build tor-browser-bin

If you fail to do that, then the difficulties you claim to have experienced are therefore of your own making.

It’s also important to follow the best practice method for updating your system when you also use the AUR; always update in this order:

1. Update regular repository packages first with:
pamac update --no-aur or sudo pacman -Syu

2. If you then wish to update software from the AUR:
pamac update --aur

3. If you also use flatpak containerised apps:
flatpak update

While this may seem inconvenient, not following this recommendation can often lead to unneeded and/or conflicting packages being installed (as dependencies), which can cause problems. :eyes:

Always ensure that Manjaro Repo packages are installed first, followed separately by software sourced from the AUR.

Finally, a reminder that use of the AUR is not officially supported by Manjaro (or Arch, for that matter). For those who ignore this warning, it is recommended to switch to the Unstable branch, which is closest to Arch (stable).

Tor is currently the easiest tool to scan and track criminals, because having a free tool that completely hides the user from governments and intelligence agencies is impossible to allow.

All true, manage your risk carefully.

When this happens, ask for help on this forum, the internet is rather large and things suggested on ‘the internet’ have a tendency to be outdated, incorrect or outright malicious.
