About a month ago I updated ProtonVPN because of a kernel update. Using the Flatpack version, even though ProtonVPN client loads without error I can still pickup ip addresses on my local network i.e. my router management page, so the VPN is not working. I have a test version of Manjaro running on VMWare workstation on this Manjaro host. Same version of Manjaro and same Flatpack ProtonVPN yet this guest Manjaro with ProtonVPN isolates the local network, so the VPN is working. Any suggestions welcome.
Check your resolver - most likely you are using openresolv and protonvpn requires systemd-resolved to avoid dns leak.
Usually a default virtual machine setup uses NAT not bridge - and therefore you cannot compare an isolated vm with your host system as your LAN will be isolated at the VM network layer.
Check your resolver…
I removed openresolv and installed systemd-resolved. I have checked etc\resolv.conf. When ProtonVPN is not loaded my nameserver is my local router 192.x.x.x. When ProtonVPN is loaded my nameserver is 10.x.x.x. However I can still connect to my router 192.x.x.x. Maybe this is normal since there is no NAT as you mentioned. Is there a utility to confirm my VPN is working external my local network.
I have done a VPN test and it appears to be working, DNS servers change geographic location.
You will always be able to access a host on your local network by IP address.
This is not to be confused with accessing a host using name resolution.
Which name resolution service is used a huge issue from a technical perspective.
But it becomes important if your normal network is censoring or even logging the traffic - the name service used could be the weak link and those responsible for the censoring and logging may show up at your doorstep.
It has become common knowledge - even got a name that implies fault - DNS leak.
Initially VPN was created to connect separate company premises over the phone line while protecting the data streams.
Marketing VPN as a measure to hide nefarious or illegal activity and circumvent country wide censorship is a product of the last decades.
