ProtonVPN - Date-time related issue

I’m trying to connect to my VPN (big provider with solid app) but my system won’t allow me. I’ve tried several packages providing the service, none of them work (GUI nor CLI). I can log in to the provider OK.
But everytime I try to connect to a VPN server, I get the message:

Unable to connect to Proton VPN: Proton VPN connection failed due to unknown reason.

Finally, when I ask the app for logs, I get:

Unable to generate logs: can't compare offset-naive and offset-aware datetimes

I’m on a freshly installed, Gnome flavored Manjaro.

Thanks!

which one have you tried, exactly?

I want to use ProtonVPN.

I have tried all of these:

python-protonvpn-nm-lib 3.16.0-1 [Installed] AUR
Official ProtonVPN NetworkManager Library, maintained by the ProtonVPN
    team.
protonvpn-cli-community-git 2.2.10.r3.g3614101-1 AUR
A Community Linux CLI for ProtonVPN
protonvpn-cli-community 2.2.12-1 AUR
A Community Linux CLI for ProtonVPN
protonvpn-applet 0.1.7-1 AUR
Unofficial basic systray applet for protonvpn-cli written in python +
    PyQt5
protonvpn-gui 1.12.0-1 [Installed] AUR
Official ProtonVPN Graphical User Interface, maintained by the
    ProtonVPN team.
protonvpn-cli 3.13.0-2 [Installed] AUR
Official ProtonVPN Command Line Interface, maintained by the ProtonVPN
    team.
protonvpn 1.0.0-3 [Installed] AUR
Official ProtonVPN metapackage that installs protonvpn-gui and
protonvpn-cli, maintained by the ProtonVPN team.

The applet is the only one I didn’t install (since I don’t need it).

The official app is proton-vpn-gtk-app. Although even that seems to have issues given the comments on the AUR page - AUR (en) - proton-vpn-gtk-app

Many of the others you listed have been unmaintained for years. E.g. GitHub - ProtonVPN/linux-cli: Official ProtonVPN Linux app (CLI)

Personally I use AirVPN which has the eddie-ui app that works perfectly.

On any gnome + archlinux to work proton-vpn-gtk-app install network-manager-applet and you are ready to go.

There is package I have been using for a long time now - it is the [protonvpn] meta package script from AUR. It provides both a working GUI and CLI

pamac build protonvpn

I am aware that Proton AG has created a newer application but the underlying technology has not changed and thus the apps build is still functional.

Yet another useless screenshot to prove a point

If you want to use the OpenVPN functionality - you need to download the openvpn files from your proton account whether it is a free or a paid account.

Please do be watch out for DNS leaks when using the openvpn mechanism provided by NetworkManager.

It may be more convenient to use systemd as resolver instead of openresolv.

Thank you. I uninstalled every other packages and installed these, and it works perfectly now.

As a bonus, is there a way to hide the applet in the system tray? It’s redundant with the “active VPN connection” icon.

Thanks a lot! I marked this as solved.

Install libappindicator-gtk3 and you can close application and manage from tray icon . Or maybe I could not understand your question.
