Whenever I log in to my laptop using the fingerprint reader, I am prompted to unlock the login keyring. Sometimes only via one modal dialog that looks like native GNOME and GTK4, but sometimes twice, with the second prompt coming from an application called Unlock Login Keyring that looks kind of alien, not like GTK3 or GTK4 in its visual nature.
Looking at the journalctl, I see:
Jul 17 07:21:58 amadeus-4 gnome-keyring-daemon[17024]: couldn't prompt for password: The operation was cancelled
Jul 17 07:21:58 amadeus-4 gnome-keyring-d[17024]: couldn't prompt for password: The operation was cancelled
It says “The operation was cancelled” which is not true. I did provide the password in both prompts.
I have tried this several times now and it seems to only happen when I use the fingerprint reader to log in. When I use my password instead, the prompt does not appear (or the prompts do not appear).
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this?
I am not sure if this is related, but there seems to be a problem with my user and credentials on this machine in general. Because whenever I access my NFS share, I am prompted for my password as well. And saving or opening files to or from this NFS share from within applications does not work either. I can only read or write to that NFS share when I access it via nautilus (after then being asked to enter my password). When I access the same share via the terminal (in my case via the Console application) I am not asked for a password and can read and write files without any problems, I have to add.
I only mention this NFS issue because on my second computer, a desktop without a fingerprint reader, a system I try to keep as close as possible to my laptop (same kernel, same packages, almost identical configuration), I have no such problems with NFS (or the login keyring) at all. I can open and write files from within applications and nautilus (as well as from within Console) without ever being prompted for a password.
I have triple-checked the NFS settings on both my NAS and these two computers, and they are identical and seem to be correct. Therefore, I suspect that something is wrong with my account, the login keyring, or both on my laptop.
Oh, the password for the login keyring and my account are the same.
Thanks in advance for any help with this!
