Problems with Booting/Shutdown in a Persistent Manjaro (USB-Drive) / Win 10 Situation

Hi there,

I have installed Manjaro on a USB Drive. It’s not a live version to install from, but what is called “persistent”, if I’m not wrong. (Like Tails with persistent setting.)

It works quite fine except that I can’t fix that sometimes either Manjaro or Win 10 don’t boot. I’m rather new, but my guess is that they don’t shut down properly (Fast boot and secure boot for Win 10 are disabled).

I would like to know, if somebody can help me with this.

  • For example there are sometimes error messages when I shut down manjaro, but I can’t read them so quickly. Is there a way to obtain them via the Terminal?

Following I’ll insert some infos that should generally be helpful according to a post.

Probably cache issues. Never remove the stick until you are sure the system is completely shutdown.

Hi and thanks for your reply. I’m however not sure if this will help.

To me it looks like the problem only occurs, after I’ve shut down either win or manjaro.
If try to start manjaro after such a normal shutdown, there’s a chance that the screen will remain black and it will not boot. (I start manjaro by interrupting the normal boot process (into win) and selecting usb dirve.)
When I then focrefully shut down the machine by holding the power button, it seems that the next try to boot into manjaro works. As if then everything was put into place.

[Eraticly win also didn’t boot, but only a few times.]

Hope this gives you an idea, unfortunately I’m rather a noob, so my description is not very technical.

Here’s a photo of some error messages during shut down.

Here’s output from this command: $ journalctl -p3 -b -1, which is supposed to be useful as stated here in this thread. I’ll try to provide more info, unfortunately I’m rather guessing as to which info may be useful and which not.

Hello,

I thought again about your proposal. Is there a way to test this?

Regards

That image seems to indicate the problem might be related to TimeShift.

Hi pobrn,

thanks for taking the time to read and reply. Coincidentally Timeshift began filling up my disk, so I had to focus on this for a day or two. Luckily I could solve it by deleting the backups it made and deleting it.

The problem with booting/shutting down still remains, though without this error message.

Did I mention that I installed manjaro on a usb drive using virtualbox? At the beginning, after booting and in the desktop environment, a message related to virtualbox was shown. Something like virtualbox is not installed or so. Which must have been, because it thought it was a virtual os, or so…
But this just vanished after some usesage (and updating?).

I would really be glad if somebody would point me into the right direction to investigate this problem. I don’t expect anyone to deliver the solutions to my problems. But I’m practically blind in this case.

Still looking for hints for this problem!
Some more output from my machine. This time dmesg:
