Problems after December 2025 update - with wifi, ranger, graphics

Hello,

I wanted to just point out a couple of issues after the latest Manjaro update.

  1. The immediate thing was that the wifi stopped working. I downgraded linux firmware mediatek to the September version, and that seems to work for now but just wondering if this will be fixed in the long run?
  2. I run Manjaro i3 on a Ryzen 7 desktop with an nvidia RTX 4060. My kernel is 6.17. I noticed after the update that text-based windows like urtxvt, vim, ranger etc glitch a lot (text blinks on and off) to the point that it is not really usable.
  3. I have an encrypted nvme drive and on booting I get an error message about ‘unable to resume from device /dev/mapper/???’, which I think has to do with hibernation?
  4. volumeicon doesn’t work anymore (it doesn’t start at all).

Just wondering if other people have noticed some of these issues and what to do about them? I’ve kind of worked through 1 by regressing the mediatek package from cache, apparently 3 is just a harmless error message, and 4 is due to a conflict with pipewire. Still haven’t worked out a way to fix 2. Hoping these will all go away in the next update?

Thank you

Hi @neurofire

There are a few possible issues that might be related, but without further information, it’s difficult to be certain.

Regarding your item #2 – From your brief description, it might be the issue with Nvidia 580xx series drivers, that has caught many offguard.

Additionally, switching to Kernel 6.18 (LTS) might be worth trying to address other issues – either that, or reverting to Kernel 6.12 (LTS).

Please help others to help you, by providing your system information as described (below) along with any other detail that might be relevant.

I’m sure someone will help further when they are able.

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit.

Note: By virtue of using the Manjaro forum you acknowledge and agree to follow Rules and Guidelines outlined; so, you really should read them:

Required Reading
Highly Recommended

Work with us, not against us

It is important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem. Please also be prepared to provide output from commands if/when asked.

Simply waiting for others to ask you questions is counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – and your clear, concise and accurate input is often relied upon in order to help you.

Please help others to make informed suggestions based on information you provide.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)
inxi man pages (manual)
Running `inxi` within a `chroot` environment
  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

p.s. where are the leading spaces? this still looks like a wall of text

Ok, I was reading the thread that I was pointed to.

So no more X11… does that mean no more i3? I guess I have to switch to sway wm or some other window manager that supports wayland?

Will try linux 618.. I installed it, but the system still boots in 617..

And I see that I have nvidia 580.. ah well.

No - it does not.

It is Plasma’s support for X11 which will be removed. Various projects for xorg still exist.

As your system runs an AMD APU - the sway is a viable alternative - as I read it - a drop-in replacement for i3.

And sway runs well on Manjaro GitHub - manjaro-sway/manjaro-sway: manjaro linux with wayland 🖼, sway 🌴 and a lot of ♥ - even a community edition https://manjaro-sway.download

Sway do not support running on Nvidia. It may be possible - but unsupported by the developers.

Nvidia users

All proprietary graphics drivers are not officially supported, including the Nvidia proprietary driver. The open source Nouveau driver can be used instead. Do not ask questions regarding the Nvidia proprietary driver here. If you have a choice of hardware, keep open source support in mind!

Ultimately, that’s very likely. So far, it’s only Gnome and KDE who are forcing it, but, in time there may be little alternative. Sway is probably a fair choice to start preparing yourself, nonetheless.

I should mention, I’ve been using Wayland (with AMD graphics) for well over two years without any significant issues. It’s typically Nvidia users who seem to experience the lion’s share of problems.

Reboot.

If that doesn’t bring any joy, select the kernel to use via the Grub menu.

Well, now you have options.

re no. 3
yes, that is about hibernation

re no. 4
there was a thread recently about this

this one:

X11 will keep on living - just not in Gnome and KDE Plasma

no 1 and no 2 are outside of my experience - different WiFi hardware and no NVIDIA hardware

So I’ve tried switching to linux618, but still have the same issues.

On trying to remove video-nvidia using the sudo mhwd -r command, I get an error that this breaks the dependency ‘linux617-nvidia’ required by linux-nvidia-meta.

So should I remove linux-nvidia-meta in order to make this work?

It’s very annoying because vim and the CLI are all affected including reading man pages.. I guess tty should be ok..

Yes, I’ve tried to install sway a couple of times, however it never seems to start. If I select it on the login screen, well it just puts me back on the login screen. If it doesn’t work with nvidia then that’s a problem..

Yes, remove that. It’s supposed to handle the removal of EOL kernels, safely, so that you’re never left without a kernel to boot with, but it gets in the way sometimes. It can always be reinstalled later, if needed.

Maybe there’s something here that might help:

A problem that you likely won’t need to worry about for a while, but at least you’re forewarned.

Thank you everyone - switching back to nvidia 575xx seems to have fixed the graphics glitching, which was the most troublesome. Hopefully a working alternative to volumeicon will come out sometime.
