Plasma freezes for about a minute

I’ve got a tricky problem here - no diagnosis as yet …

The symptoms are

  • mouse is visible and cursor moves
  • can close open windows on desktop but otherwise no response to mouse clicks
  • the system functions normally when accessed through a terminal (alt-shift F3 say)
  • no response to keyboard input (apart from alt-shift F3 apparently)
  • system monitor widget is frozen
  • after about a minute of this all plasma behaviour returns to normal

It happens

  • when switching back to manjaro computer from windows computer using a kvm switch (has worked flawlessly for 10 + years)
  • when changing user

does not happen

  • when logging out and back in again as same user
  • when logged in as a user other the my usual one

Since when …
has been going on for a few months
could be related to/ caused by installing input-remapper but not sure

Possible solutions tried

  1. System Freezes on Power Button Actions After Recent Updates - #5 by BG405
    System settings > Session > Desktop Session > “Start with an empty session”
    not a fix

  2. [Solved] Unresponsive KDE Plasma 6 desktop after update / Applications & Desktop Environments / Arch Linux Forums
    remove ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc
    not a fix

  3. clear plasma cache

If any plasma aficionados have any ideas, I would love to hear

You have more than one issue - which appear to have different source

Input switchers - personal opinion - are a pain - they never worked for me - especially with modern equipment with more complex data streams.

How do you change user if not logging out and in as different user?

The fast user switching - using sddm - has never worked well - is anyone really using this?

I am locked in to using Windows for some of the time.
The kvm switch is a high quality expensive unit an has worked without a glitch all these years.

I change to user B when Plasma is behaving normally
Then, switching to Windows and back does not cause the 1 minute delay problem - ie Plasma responds immediately as it should.

So clearly there is an issue in my Plasma config …
Trying to fix it without having to start with a new user …

Please create a new user account (for diagnostic purposes) and update us as to whether or not any of the issues persist when performing these actions from the new account.

Additionally, please provide system information as described (below).

Regards.

System Information

Output of this command (formatted according to forum requirements) may be useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide more information and outputs from other commands whenever asked.

OK will provide the info …

I already have another user account - when logged in to that account, these issues do not occur

A clear indication that the problem is limited to your account.

There are two ways to remedy this;

A) Clean up your current account and find whatever might be causing the problem. You might learn something about maintaining your system in the process if you take this route; or:

B) Spend the time necessary to create/use a fresh account, and hopefully leave all your troubles behind.

Both have their merits. :wink:

Regards.

OK thanks
I guess I had already thought about these 2 options and was hoping someone might have some more specific insights …

As already mentioned …

Without knowing what you may have installed, misconfigured, or otherwise done to contribute to the issues you’re experiencing, any specific insights are difficult to magically will into being, and likely to be time intensive; the game of 1000 questions.

The fastest way back to normalcy seems clear. :man_shrugging:

The KVM

No matter the relative quality of any hardware or how long it might have admirably performed it’s function, I’m afraid that Murphy’s Law always prevails; there may come a time when that hardware fails, or falters.

Off topic;

Many of us are to varying degrees; either by circumstance or necessity (but seldom by choice).

Have you considered multi-booting with Windows and Manjaro on the same computer (but separate disks)?

Some time ago I authored a guide for doing just that;
I hope you find it useful at some point.

[Multiboot] Windows and Linux on Separate Disks

I’ll work through your suggestions, thanks

Still waiting for that system information.

Providing it may help members to identify other possible contributors to your problems. It is also the minimum information usually requested in a Support context.

dot dot dot …

Regards.

You can create a new user to see if that fixes it without doing anything with your main USER.

Good advice;

I too run a separate Windows system (Lenovo M75q as tiny as it gets) - not because I am forced to it - but because it is convenient for me and my employment - all work related stuff is on that box - and when the time comes I simply hand over the box to my employer including login credentials - then they can assign whomever they want to continue where I left off.

As I never found the switch solution attractive - I am running the system headless and access it using remmina and remote desktop and that is by any measure better than having to deal with virtual machines loosing network or refuse to load.

Nice idea, and remmina looks pretty cool - I’ll give that a try

As the OP has avoided providing system information and marked a solution with two options given - the latter being to reinstall Manjaro - we can safely presume the latter was chosen, which means this topic is useless to anyone.
