Periodic Complete Crash

Not sure where to start trying to figure this one out…

Maybe about once a week I am having a complete crash happen. The KDE bars will crash/close and the background images go to black. Most of the time there are no error messages. Often running apps will continue though some complain about not being able to access files. Browsers will run for a while but will eventually crash as well. Attempting to start a terminal via shortcut keys causes a dialog to pop up that just says “Error - KDE Deamon” in the title and no text (just an empty dialog). Killing X11 with the shortcut just results in a black screen with blinking cursor. I can only hard reset the computer.

As far as I can tell I am never doing the same thing when it happens so I don’t have any specific action that might cause it.

Any ideas where to start trying to diagnose this one?

logs (one minute before the crash)

journalctl -p4 --since="" --until=""

since, and until format example : "“2021-08-08 18:17:16” …

is resent and boot after crash? we can find boots (here last 10)

journalctl --list-boots --no-pager | head -10

Thanks @papajoke. Next time it happens I will write down the date/time it started and see what shows up in the log.

Happened again. The log ended a few minutes before the crash happened and didn’t resume until I hard refreshed. Don’t see anything outside of some periodic warnings. Nothing seems to relate to a full crash.

Happened again. Not sure if this has anything to do with it. There are A LOT of XCB errors.

Here is also my current boot log. Didn’t used to see so many warnings & errors before. No idea if any of it is related.

As soon as I logged in today the screen froze. Not sure if it is the same problem, but likely is.
This is the last issue that showed in the log and I’ve seen it before:

I added irqpoll to the boot parameters to see if that helps.

Adding irqpoll causes a kernel panic every time I boot. It doesn’t appear to dump to any log files, so not sure i can post the output here.

My “best guess” is that there is some bug in the Intel microcode that is causing it. There are a number of issues opened on Github relating to crashes and hangs. I tried 4 different kernels and the issue still persists, it also happens on Ubuntu. Went through 2 Nvidia and about 3 mesa/Intel drivers and still happens. Also just updated the BIOS to a new version that was released this month and still have the issue. The only potential cause I see in the logs is a periodic hang where one of the CPU cores freezes up - sometimes it recovers after a 20-30 seconds but other times it just freezes indefinitely. I’ve not seen it happen in Manjaro but Ubuntu would periodically freeze at boot with errors about a CPU core hanging.

It appears kernel 5.14 has fixed whatever the issue was. It’s been over a week and there has been no crash.

Every so often when I click to open a browser the primary screen will go completely black (it is on but like there is a black box covering the entire screen – secondary monitor is still fine). Doing alt+ctrl+del and logging out & back in fixes the issue for a long time. Not sure if it is related, may be a separate issue.
