Performance drop for UT2004 after switching to testing branch + newer kernel (OpenGL rendering regression?)

Hi,

After switching from the stable to testing branch and updating the kernel to 6.17.0-rc7-1, I noticed a significant drop in performance for Unreal Tournament 2004 (64-bit version). I want to signal this because the game uses opengl.

Before (stable branch + previous kernel):

  • Game launched normally, 450+ FPS on DM-Rankin.

After (testing branch + 6.17.0-rc7-1 kernel):

  • Game only launches with:
export SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11
./ut2004-bin-linux-amd64

  • Performance drops dramatically (around 144 FPS on DM-Rankin).
  • Using mesa 25.2.3-2 and sdl12-compat 1.2.68-2.

System details:

  • Branch: testing
  • Kernel: 6.17.0-rc7-1-MANJARO
  • Desktop: Plasma 6.4.5, Wayland session
  • OpenGL renderer: AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (radeonsi, Navi14, Mesa 25.2.3)

The game relies on SDL 1.2 (sdl12-compat) and OpenGL. Although UT2004 was written for older OpenGL versions, it now runs on Mesa 25.2.3 with OpenGL 4.6 (compatibility profile).

For now, I’ve reverted to the stable branch and current 6.16.9-1 kernel using timeshilf.

Like your monitor refresh rate?

My monitor refresh rate is not relevant for the game, there’s no synchronization, and the frame rate varies a lot map to map and even from view to view on the same map. I had many maps at 30 or fewer fps, too. I just tested the same map, same view with both system states, so between stable branch with the current kernel and the testing branch with the RC one.

What I think is worthy of attention is having such regression on OpenGL rendering.

I’m basing my answer on the information provided. Now if it is 30FPS it is not the same, this should have been in the first post.

Well, no, because those instances of 30 FPS weren’t tested in both setups. I had reason to test because I suspected a serious loss of performance, and what I shared is the result of that test, which presents something objective to allow balanced comparison. And you can see that I had 450 FPS on the stable branch, as stated in the first post - no reason to suspect a synchronization.

I’m not really asking help for the game to run better, although it would be very much welcome. I primary want to report what appears to be a regression in OpenGL rendering.

If useful, I can try to run more tests. Bear in mind that I have to upgrade and downgrade the system between each time, so make it count! And with pleasure if it can help the devs.

Then if the purpose of this Support thread is to report OpenGL rendering regression, I think it should be done upstream, at the relevant source maintaining the package with issue.
