Pamac manager stability crashing issues while updating

Hi I have noticed for a while that pamac-manager has some bad and troubling stability on crucial and critical moments like updating where it will randomly crashing on multiple systems both on XFCE4 and mainly on Gnome while updating and will even crash during the actual installation process of packages breaking the OS which makes Manjaro not very stable to use.

Here is my log, luckily it only crashed while downloading packages as it had 2gb of packages to download and install. after I re-ran the update it said it was all updated. I have ran into issues with this where it didn’t install the kernel package properly and borking my system a few times thanks to Pamac.

I would report it on the Manjaro Gitlab page but Gitlab account is pending approval from your GitLab administrator

Even on my laptop after pamac crashed on my desktop when I ran the pacmac update command it randomly stopped downloading half way through so I ran it again and told me it was waiting on another package manager…

Yes but the bigger more important part or concern of this report is the fact that Pamac’s graphical package manager will completely crash while installing a bunch of updates and can/will cause your system to get borked in the process

Summary: coredumpctl doesn’t record any crash either. So it ran through, since there is progress written in /var/log/pacman.log, but the terminal output, i.e., the visual feedback, breaks.

The issue I ran into was when I ran pamac-manager in the terminal it was giving me no out so I had to use journalctl to get the log.

Again, for reference;

Sometimes an update check might still be running in the background, or for some other reason the db.lck file is created to prevent you from interfering with the currently running process.

Sometimes, the lock file isn’t removed gracefully.

1. Check whether a lock file exists;

lsof /var/lib/pacman/db.lck

If the output of the command is similar to:

lsof: status error on /var/lib/pacman/db.lck: no such file or directory

then the problem lies elsewhere.

2. If no output is returned at all, then a lock file likely remains set, and you can delete it with the following command:

sudo rm /var/lib/pacman/db.lck

Thank you for the info but In regards of knowing how to use pacman is important but that isn’t the issue here, the issue here is Pamac’s GUI and commandline tools doing things it shouldn’t be which can cause user issues or system breakage especially when it comes to pamac manager GTK crashing mid-update. This issue is reoccurring and really should be fixed as it will ruin the great experience Manjaro has user experience wise.

Knowing what to do about the lock file may have gone some way toward resolving your issue. At the very least, it may help others in a similar situation.

With regards pamac-manager - generally - yes, it can sometimes fail for a variety of reasons. I doubt many of us can dispute that fact.

However, in this instance (and judging by previous comments) it looks like something else might have been in play. What that was, specifically, I can’t say.

I had a similar crash with the last update in CLI : [Stable Update] 2025-05-04 - Kernels, GNOME 48.1, NVIDIA, KDE Gear, KDE Frameworks, LXQt - #51 by Denis_Pom (and several others in GUI for previous updates). I now know that I must wait for pamac-daemon to disappear from Task Manager to be sure that the updates is done.
I would like to use pamac (CLI or GUI) without fearing a crash. After all pamac is THE tool delivered and promoted by Manjaro for managing packages / updates / AUR / Flatpack …
I use pacman sometimes but why should we run updates in Terminal or TTY while we have a graphical tool ?
I also installed octopi and yay and played a bit with them but I still prefer pamac !

I always update 3 different systems using always the latest pamac-gtk. While this works for 2 systems without any issues (one system runs Plasma, the other LXQt) so far, on the third system I see the reported issues too since recently. So for this update on the third system i switched to LXQt because i thought the issue might be related to GUI, Gtk etc. But Pamac failed during download. This is different from before i think because as far as i can recall before this it failed during the installation part once (and under Plasma).

Anyway, gameslayer9999 and Denis_Pom report that also the CLI fails. My conclusion would be that the issue is not related to the GUI at all. Moreover, regarding pacman, while pacman is the Arch package manager, pamac depends on libpamac which in turn depends on pacman namely on libalpm.so which is included in the pacman package and the Packager of Manjaro’s pacman 7.0.0 packages is Philip Mueller which may indicate there are some modifidations to this package from the original.
So somewhere there is an issue and it isn’t even clear in which package - could also be in the pacman package.
The question is more what could fail during the downloading packages part already that looks like a crash.

Just for clarification, when you say;

Are you saying that you have multiple DE’s installed on the third machine? One wonders if the non-standard mix of dependencies and/or package versions might have some bearing on the issue.

Yes, there are different DEs installed but not only on the 3rd machine. Still if the CLI fails too that should be evidence that there isn’t any GUI stuff involved.

I checked journalctl but there isn’t any stacktrace about pamac, as far as i can tell.

As much as I might enjoy placing the blame on pamac-manager (it’s never been a favourite of mine), my initial thought was perhaps a combination of bad mirror and being too quick on the trigger to perform a sync (with respect the OP’s issue).

As the update continues and is properly done, I don’t think it’s a mirror problem but pamac CLI imagines the update is completed (or the GUI closes its window) while pamac-daemon continues to download then install the packages and run the hooks.

Ok but even if saying it’s a mirror issue that doesn’t exactly solve the issue or stop pamac-manager crashing for example.

This isn’t a users issue to resolve it’s an issue to be resolved by the developers to stop/prevent this from happening.

That said I love pamac and the CLI tool, I think it’s amazing and really bridges the gap for new users to use Linux. Heck I still point people to Manjaro and believe it’s one of the best Linux distro’s and recommended but lets not try and point fingers, we should instead have the developers take responsibility, be friendly and work together to resolve the issue so we can make it even better .

Man did it to me again and I recorded it happening this time, can’t even trust to do an update without it happening…

Now all of a sudden after it says I only have 3 package updates, no idea what happened with all the other packages it said I had to update
