Pamac Database locking/sync problem

Being offered the latest list of updates for my XFCE Manjaro installation (linux 515 kernel), when I click on ‘Apply’ I get the following message:

unable to lock database
Failed to synchronize databases
Failed to synchronize AUR database

and the updates don’t progress. How can I overcome this to keep my system up to date?

Did you search the forum for any or all of these key phrases?

In terminal:

sudo rm /var/lib/pacman/db.lck

pamac update --force-refresh
