Pamac cli crashed updating with error zsh: terminated pamac update

I was updating to Stable Update] 2026-02-23
I opened Konsole and run

pamac update --dry-run

I got no error so I then run

pamac update

it was downloading qtsomething, the message

zsh: terminated pamac update

was appended to what it was displaying in that moment.
I was using firefox and it kept working; I had KDE’s system monitor open and I saw the system was still downloading stuff so I let it be, then I clicked on “tools” to check the logs and in that moment the UI froze.
So I did REISUB.
At boot it says can’t load the kernel etc (it can’t load any kernel that I have).
I have timeshift’s snapshot so I booted on of those, I still haven’t taken any steps in fixing because maybe having the system in this state can help troubleshooting the issue.
I was told to post my inxi -zv8 so here it is.

Anything I can do to help in finding the issue I’ll try, just ask

Well then fallback to a robust workflow:

pacman-mirrors
  • If Green then skip the next step.
sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack --api --timeout 3 && pacman-mirrors
  • if Green, then carry on. If not, let us know.
sudo pacman -Syu

Following that, up to you…

pamac upgrade --aur

any issues, just go with:

yay

after that you could just run pamac again to see if it’s cleared up.

This is great…

I actually use the Ghostly notifier now (i.e. Octopi - but it looks like a Ghost) and it is set to open a terminal when updates come in.

Though I’m more likely to pre-empt this by running my hideous abbreviation anyway.

First ‘mirrors’ runs ‘pacman-mirrors’ to check, then ‘mup’ updates them…
abbr mup 'sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack --api --timeout 3 && pacman-mirrors '

Simply typing ‘up’ after that runs:

sudo pacman -Syu && pamac update --aur --devel && flatpak update

Well, octopi is a wrapper around pacman, and if you know the Pacman game:backhand_index_pointing_down:

… then you’ll understand where the appearance of that icon comes from. :wink:

I would suggest follow what @Ben posted as it looks like your system has not been updated for awhile.Your still using Kernel: 6.19.0-rc7-1-MANJARO arch and plasma is still on KDE Plasma v: 6.5.5.

Your point is probably valid, but I think stable and testing branches are still on KDE Plasma 6.5.5.

Not from that screenshot.

Hold on, I’ll dig out my Amiga 500… I played this all night - with the music (stereo no less) turned up loud enough to annoy the neighbours.

It was fully updated, I’m on stable.

More issues.

pacman-mirrors

It only had loke 5 mirrors and only 1 was OK
so

sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack --api --timeout 3 && pacman-mirrors

Added a ton more

sudo pacman -Syu

It started downloading and installing, got to 299/350 (it was SMP IIRC) and the pc froze. After 10 minutes I used REISUB, now I could not boot from the latest snapshot, I had to go 1 back.

Should I try yay? Should I check someting else before?
Should I “fix” my system before updating?
I think this is correct, right?

sudo su
install-grub
update-grub
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

If you can actually use the System Requests, then your machine is not frozen, because those are direct one-key kernel commands. In other words, the machine was just being very slow, possibly due to a stuck process that was hanging up the others, or due to a bottleneck situation.

No. yay is a wrapper around pacman with access to the AUR.

Yes, but you can do it in one go… :backhand_index_pointing_down:

You mean just

[ -f /var/lib/pacman/db.lck ] && rm -f /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
pacman-mirrors -f && pacman -Syyu
update-grub
exit

I don’t need to chroot, right? My pc has booted from a snapshot, I’m not using the live usb

If you want to repair your system, then you do need to chroot from the snapshot. On the other hand, if you’re going to roll back the snapshot, then it’s not needed, but then you must first reboot into the restored system.

I’m getting so tired of this, I have another thread open in this same sub, everytime I update the OS breaks.
Now I booted the live usb and chroot in my system, I had to use

SKIP_AUTOSNAP=1

to have it update, It did, still couldn’t boot, chroot again, tried installing and updating grub, now it wont show at boot, it boots but the screen stays black with no GUI.
ctrl+fn or ctrl+alt+fn (I tried with FN key pressed too since it’s a multimedia kayboard) doesn’t bring me to a tty.
I’m tempted or reinstalling and never update again :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I do appreciate that you’re a little frustrated, but with regard your comment – in the first instance "reinstalling ", we would then be obliged to close the thread without a solution – and in the second “never update again”, you would no longer be eligible for Support via this forum.

Quick tip:

I note that Octopi was mentioned earlier as a replacement for pamac-manager (Add/Remove Software) – further to that, if you use the AUR I’d suggest also installing yay, as Octopi uses that to handle the AUR instead of Pamac.

Regards.

I am very frustrated but I’m not giving up easly.
I’m trying to have grub to show again, so I chroot, tried updating (nothing to do) so

Update.
After a lot of tinkering I found out a ton of .so were missing because the system wouldn’t compile stuff and throw errors about missing libraries, so I searched every single one of them on google and reinstalled the package it was from.
After that I found out there were so many mtree errors the console wouldn’t let me read them all. A ■■■■■■■ of checksum error, date mismatch, modified files.
Good thing is that I found a package on the live usb that lets you chroot in your system automatically even on brtfs ( it even tries to fix grub and update the system by itself, it’s really awesome) so my life got a bit easier trying to fix it all.
In the end I found another tool on the live usb that fixed the OS, it’s called calamares :upside_down_face:
it was the only thing that worked in the end.

Oh, so my patch was finally accepted, eh? :stuck_out_tongue:
