It has never been present. I have never seen it before. I have no idea why it is there.
I used to run LibreWolf, currently switched to Mullvad Browser.
When I start my Signal app - the never-before-seen process called ‘org.chromium.chromium’ appears in the list of applications in System Monitor. When I try to close it - Signal shuts down as well.
Which begs the question - is it needed or can I remove it/ and how?
Probably an electron app. Many modern apps are just websites with a build in browser chromium. Very annoying, but we live in an era in which the young programmers expect chatgpt to write their bad apps and do not know better. And this is the result.
I do not use signal, but i find it very annoying on spotify for example. Why would a music app need gigabytes of space and a built in webbrowser…
I have to agree with @Teo – Signal is likely an Electron app (I don’t use it, but the likelihood is high from your description) – Electron is basically Chromium under the hood.
