I have installed the QOpenVPN, but the app does not start.
Any suggestions or alternative options?

qopenvpn is a “indicator-app”, there is no real window. After starting have a look at the indicator section, if there is one on the pinephone.
Update on my progress - the extra/openvpn app works, but so far neither the NetworkManager VPN plugin for OpenVPN nor any another app with GUI which is obviously highly desirable on mobile touch screen.
For now I used CLI and the phone connects works well with OpenVPN.
