'Open File' window

How can I add favorite folders to the ‘Open File’ window.

What is the “Open File” window - what do you mean by this?
How do you get to the “Open File” window that you mean?

When I am using an application and need to open a file, I choose “Open file” from the file menu. A window appears with a list of common folders on the left and what appears to be recent folders in the main part of the window.

I would like to add and/or remove folders to/from the list of common folders on the left side of the window.

I’m uncertain whether you can add custom directories to the dialog as you suggest. However, I recall that bookmarks could be created/used in Thunar that also appear in Open/Save dialogs.

If I recall, you can edit ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks (or ~/.config/gtk-4.0/bookmarks) to list a few favourite directories.

  • The bookmark format is similar to a local URL:
    file://[path to target][space][bookmark name]
( taken from How to use bookmarks in Thunar )
  • If the bookmarks file mentioned doesn’t exist, create it.

A useful example might be to add recent:/ at the bottom of the file to add a bookmark for recent locations; the bookmark should appear immediately in the Thunar side panel and be available in the respective dialogs.

Bookmarks should be a decent workaround (if it still works that way).

Regards.

Note; it’s been a while since I’ve used XFCE for any great length of time, so this may not be 100% accurate.

I still don’t know what or where that is. :man_shrugging:
May be lost in translation - my system isn’t in english.

With the file manager (Thunar) open, you can pick a folder on the right and drag it to some place on the left pane under “Places” - a line (or two) will indicate where it will be placed when you release the mouse.
It is commonly called “creating a Bookmark” I guess.

ps:

Ah - I misunderstood you.
Not from the file manager, but from within some application.
Should work when you create a bookmark in the file manager as described above.
