OLED Brightness Issues

Hey everyone. I just moved back to Manjaro - KDE Plasma after some time as I’ve finally built an AMD system for increased compatibility in games and just in general. One thing I didn’t expect to run into was issues with my new OLED monitors. The brightness is incredibly low similar to Windows when I’m not using AutoHDR with the brightness turned very high.

I’ve searched the settings, the AUR, and similar articles but can’t find anything to fix this that is even remotely in the last year. I really really don’t want to go back to Windows but this has to be fixed. Any ideas?

While I’m no Linux master, I am at the beginnings of intermediate in knowledge.

Update: Noticed the brightness fluctuating heavily. Sometimes it’s actually fine. Othertimes, it’s not. Tinkering with kernels right now. Default .iso download isn’t LTS.

Secondary Update: I changed the kernel from 6.5.5-1 to 6.1.55-1. Issue persists even though I am now on an LTS kernel. Only time brightness appears correct is on white web-pages. Otherwise, the brightness is super low. This may indicate why my brightness appears to be shifting but still doesn’t explain the dark display. It is visible enough but not nearly as bright as Windows.

System Hardware:

GPU: AMD RX 7900XTX
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X
RAM: 128GB Trident Z5 Neo RGB
Storage: 3 x 2TB Gen 4 NVME SSD’s

Current workaround: Setting xrandr brightness manually though this only affects gamma and washes out white web pages. Everything else looks ok but games don’t look right either.

Possibly related to observations:-

System Settings → Display and Monitor → Night Colour

If ‘Night Colour’ is activated, the effect can be disconcerting across the gamut of monitors in the wild. If not active, then this is unrelated. Cheers.

Unfortunately the latter in this situation. I enabled it at first out of habit but disabled it when I began to troubleshoot. Only thing I’ve found that gets close is xrandr but that is only gamma and not actual brightness settings. I’m a Microsoft government support engineer so I’ve tried just about everything I can think of thus far. Despite Manjaro being given the patches for the linux-oled kernel, it still doesn’t really work.

Unfortunately, a lot of the current documentation, AUR OLED software, etc. (Even for Arch) is dated back to 2020.

Some quick questions that may help others to assist:

  • Which DE are you running?
  • What graphics are you using?
  • Are you using X11 or Wayland?

I just had a quick surf on the topic. The low brightness seems to be a fairly common complaint. Here’s one article that discusses the issue with a modicom of depth; albeit in relation to laptops with Oled screens; 2019; in Windows parlance, no doubt, but it tends to raise a few points worth consideration.

I also have a new OLED monitor. But everything is perfect under KDE. I am thrilled. Mine is a 27" LG

Perhaps the OP might benefit from knowing your configuration.

HDR support on Linux is not implemented yet in the display servers, though it is being worked on

There is some more info here on gaming support, which requires a custom kernel;

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/HDR_monitor_support

I might hold on to that link, in case I ever need it. Thanks.

You have a very good point. Can’t believe I made the mistake of not including that info. I am using KDE Plasma and primarily X11 as I have not found Wayland performance to really be there yet. Now, what do you mean by “What graphics are you using?”? Seems like a fairly incomplete sentence.

Thank you for posting this! I will look to test this when I get the chance. I don’t often dig into custom kernels just because it’s hard to know if a kernel is safe to use or not. I typically use the officially listed ones. If not, a hardened kernel.

Well, I wasn’t suggesting you share your family photo album.

Graphics; by extension, your video graphics, dGPU and/or iGPU and respective drivers; any drivers for the Oled (if relevant). Graphics.

This tutorial How to Find System Information outlines some of the commands that will be useful to produce information about your system. That information helps others to help you, more effectively; rather than playing a game of 1000 questions.

Cheers.

Lol for sure and I’ll have to re-install and give it another shot. I nuked my drive and regretfully picked up Windows so that I could just game and stop wanting to claw my eyes out. I will try to re-install it and get you some numbers on a secondary drive so that I can figure this out because I don’t ever want to go back to Windows again if I have a choice.

Here is all the current information:

  • Observation: Brightness was perfect when I got into the new install. However, a few minutes after I got in, the brightness dimmed and stayed that way. Confirmed that night settings were off.

As previously mentioned I’ve never used an OLED, however this information may help someone else.

I’d also refer you to post 7 where an important point is alluded to regarding the current state of HDR support.

I just came here to say something very similar actually. @weingeist

I did several hours of research and noticed that the auto-dimming was a monitor firmware internal setting for OLED. After disabling them, everything works just fine. I appreciate everyone’s assistance here.

The biggest setting was disabling smart energy saving. But I will definitely have to change the monitor color calibration.
