Okular from manjaro repo fails to open pdf error

Hello all,

recently flatpak okular failed to run under wayland, so I switched to manjaro repo okular: after an update okular - and gnome document viewer - failed to open PDFs.

I fixed Gnome document viewer by symlinking libgpgmepp.so.6 to current libgpgmepp.so.7.

But Okular still has the error message:

„file:///home/leder/Sync/Banking /Disposal of funds.pdf“ kann nicht geöffnet werden ( )

Please troubleshoot with me!

Thanks in advance!

Best regards
Gerrit

Mod edit: changed “dokumentenbetrachter” to its English translation “document viewer”

If I were you, I’d try to remove spaces and try again. If that leads nowhere, perhaps start ocular from the Terminal (it might spit out more errors), or maybe use something like:

pacman -Ss pdftotext
extra/python-pdftotext 2.2.2-11
    Simple PDF text extraction`

If there is something wrong with ocular only.

Other than that, no idea.

I’m wondering if the system is fully synced, and also if your system is looking for the correct path to okular (are you certain the flatpak version has been removed from your system?). Please provide the output of:

which okular && okular --version

As you are on Stable branch, the result should be:

/usr/bin/okular
okular 25.12.1

Also, the output of:

find /usr/lib/libgpgmepp*

This should be:

/usr/lib/libgpgmepp.so
/usr/lib/libgpgmepp.so.7
/usr/lib/libgpgmepp.so.7.0.0

Also, does the error message occur with all .pdf files, or just the one mentioned in your post:

Maybe the file could be corrupt or encoded in a way that okular cannot read it. So, try testing on another .pdf file.

Finally, some system information might also be useful to the helpers here. Please provide the output of:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

inxi -zv8
Running `inxi` in `chroot`

Note that any code or command output (such as inxi output) should be placed within a scrollable pre-formatted text enclosure according to forum guidelines.

See here for instructions:

[MiniHowTo] Present code or command output

Note: Grave accent (or, backtick) characters are used. :eyes:

For inline code or to show a single command:

  • for example, typing: `code here` will display the text as code here.

For multi-line command output:

  • place text beween two rows of three (```) backtick characters to form a scrollable text box, or …
  • use the </> button in the Compose window to achieve the same result.

The empty row between these rows of backtick characters is where to paste any multi-line command output (such as inxi).

An example of a pre-formatted text enclosure:

What is a Quark?

A. In Physics, an elementary particle and fundamental constituent of matter.
B. A character from the Star Trek: "Deep Space Nine" television series.
C. A soft, creamy, usually unsalted cheese traditional to central Europe.

Hello scotty65,
thank you for your ideas:

  • I am on manjaro testing
  • error happens on any PDF file

I’m starting to wonder if you are missing a Qt dependency which is normally installed on Plasma systems, but may not be installed on your Gnome system.

I noticed that my system has the qgpgme package installed as a dependency of gpgmepp. qgpgme provides the Qt bindings for GPGME. okular is a KDE package, and requires quite a few qt6- packages.

So try installing qgpgme (if it is not already installed) and see if that resolves the issue:

pamac install qgpgme

or

sudo pacman -Syu qgpgme
pamac info qgpgme
pamac info qgpgme

Edit: I’m not 100% certain if the libgpgmepp error you encountered when trying to open a .pdf in Gnome document viewer is also behind the issue you are experiencing with okular, but your error message in the first post doesn’t provide much to go on:

Is that the full text of the error message?

Anyway, installing the qgpgme package (and any required Qt dependencies) won’t do any harm when it comes to running Qt-based KDE applications on a Gnome system.

I installed missing qgpgme package: no success.

Then I chatGPTed the console error a little: I had a manual install of poppler in /usr/local/lib - removing it and updating the system loader and okular and poppler did the trick!

Thanks alot @scotty65 !
Have a nice week!

Since some updates of pacman package “okular” I have in gnome dark mode the font colour black on dark grey background colour, can I configure this anywhere to readable settings?

qt6ct should be the place.
