Okular and Kate slow ~5 second start

Over the last few days I noticed that many apps are delayed when I try to start them for a few seconds (the one I start most often and therefore annoy me the most when delayed are kate & ocular).

I also noticed that the krunner utility that opens with alt+f2 didn’t open and instead gave the error:

Could not activate remote peer ‘org.kde.krunner’: startup job failed

Which I was able to woraround by manually starting “krunner” in a terminal. Now it opens super fast again whenever I need it, but before it also took a few seconds before showing the quoted error, so I believe this might be related.

Can somebody help me debug this? How do I find what causes that delay and how to fix it?

Maybe the nouveau open source nvidia driver might be at fault - I found this is my dmesg output:

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

inxi -zv8

Ah, sorry, could have though of that myself…
here you go:

$ sudo inxi -zv8

What exactly did you do? The reason I have to ask is that the right way would be to check its status first, noting that Plasma uses systemd. So as normal user (no root, no sudo)

systemctl --user status plasma-krunner

and to restart it

systemctl --user restart plasma-krunner

There are lots of other Plasma services running this way (wouldn’t describe it as workaround).

Another question for clarification: Did you logout and login again to reset the whole session and this didn’t fix the behavior?

Also, did you try creating a new USER to ensure it’s not just your USER data in home?

sorry for the delay. No I did not yet logout + login again. I just started it directly, not by restarting the service. I now killed my manually started process and tried it with systemctl but failed:

$ systemctl --user status plasma-krunner

$ systemctl --user restart plasma-krunner
Job for plasma-krunner.service failed because a timeout was exceeded.
See "systemctl --user status plasma-krunner.service" and "journalctl --user -xeu plasma-krunner.service" for details.

I don’t want to close everything and do a logout + login now, but I’ll try to find time for that later today and report back on if that helped.

so now I rebooted and it didn’t help. will try creating a new user next

And as @Ben indicated, creating a new User account to test whether or not the same condition persists can help to give others some direction; narrow their focus.

If the condition can’t be replicated in another User account, that’s a strong indication that the problem is limited to your specific User account, and not a global issue which would be indicated otherwise.

This is an important step to help isolate the problem.

Regards.

New user had the same problem.

Since the dmesg output hinted that the nuveau driver might be the problem I decided to reinstall the current proprietary NVIDIA drivers and the problem went away, though my previous problem (why I uninstalled them a few months ago) came back: when the laptop tries to go to sleep while I have mounted a remote directory via sshfs it just freezes up and I have to kill him with REISUB.

See also: Nvidia prevents my laptop from suspending

This seems to be the solution for this issue.

You can probably mark your own post as the solution in this instance, and then focus on the other thread.

Regards.

I don’t know if this is relevant here - I don’t even know if my thought is applicable.

The thought is, if your last opened document(s) was stored on a network path, the list or recent documents may be slow to load.

The thought implies a slowdown - perhaps trying to cache the most recent document - but the network path is either not available - the laptop has moved to another network - or there is no network connection at all.

This is pure speculation - but it could be that the network path is mounted using fstab - lacking the user,_netdev mount option - but that is … speculation.

thank you for your input, but I don’t have any permanently mounted network drivers on my laptop, I only mount them when I need them using sshfs usually.

And the problem described here started right on boot (after auto-login - it’s secured using luks full disk encryption)
