Occasional full power cycle in specific games using Proton

Hi, I’ve stumbled on this issue first in one of early releases of deadlock. My computer would shut down randomly when playing, no warning, no stutter, no artifacts or anything, just suddenly, black screen, no audio, and after a second the bios start up.

I assumed it was some issue with the game since it was still a early release, but today i stumbled on a similar issue in a much more repeatable situation.
When playing satisfactory (using heroic launcher with proton), and using RMB attack of the boom box, after the use animation completes and the attack is supposed to happen, about 1 in 3 times the same crash happens. It is almost frame perfect to the animation.

There is no error logs that I could find relating to this, and online search turned up nothing.

I’m not particularly skilled with linux so I might be missing something simple.

running a nvidia rtx 3060ti

AMD Ryzen 5 3600

ddr4 32 GB of RAM

X11

Had stability issues related to ram before but they were caused by a faulty XMP profile and seemed unrelated to this

I’m afraid I’m unable to help with your issue. However, I’ll mention that such crashes might often be attributed to WINE or (particularly older) Nvidia graphics. In some cases lack of swap space, or free space generally, can be a factor.

Without more information it will be difficult to diagnose.

To begin with, please provide the expected system information as described (below) to allow others to identify possible contributors.

I’m sure someone will help when they are able.

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit.

To that end, links are provided (below) - Please use them.

Be prepared to provide outputs from various commands when asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Waiting for others to blindly ask questions can be counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – Instead, please help others to make informed suggestions, based on information you provide.

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

Thanks, here is the extra info, I have plenty of free space so I doubt it’s that.

This could well be (at least part of) the issue; if you run out of RAM, processes will get dumped as there is nowhere for them to “spill over in to”.

See:

Added a recommended amount of swap space but the crash still happens

Did a bit of testing and it seems to happen only or mostly when I’m playing a video in the background, so maybe a gpu issue? either that or audio, since the item used applies some audio filters to the game’s audio when working properly. That’s all I was able to figure out.
