Hi all, I’m having some problems getting a Telsa K80 working. I installed the drivers using the automatic install, with the following:

sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

But I’m getting the following when running nvidia-smi and I don’t see the card in Blender under Preferences > System (tabs) for setting the GPU etc.

$ nvidia-smi
No devices were found

I tried removing everything and installing via cli and also via the gui to auto install etc. I also tried manual install as well etc.

Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks!

On the arch wiki it says the following, which I tried to install (after removing the others, with reboots between etc.)

> For the Kepler (NVE0/GKXXX) series, install the nvidia-470xx-dkmsAUR package. - Source

Also per the arch wiki, I tried the following:

> 1. Remove kms from the HOOKS array in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and regenerate the initramfs. This will prevent the initramfs from containing the nouveau module making sure the kernel cannot load it during early boot.

You have a hybrid system using prime.
You must call the nvidia with prime-run.

glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
prime-run glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'

:no_good_woman:
You should undo all of that and force-reinstall the proper mhwd profile.
Then return to the first part of this post and check on prime again.

Thanks for the support!

I made sure the kms hook was reinstated and I regenerated the initramfs and ran update-grub while I was at it and then rebooted. The nvidia-470xx-dkms driver was already uninstalled.

I ran sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-470xx-prime to force-reinstall the proper mhwd profile (though, let me know if that’s not what you meant?)

I also installed sudo pacman -S nvidia-prime

I should mention the OP commands and the following ones were being ran over ssh.

$ glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
Error: unable to open display
$ prime-run glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
Error: unable to open display

And these ones were being run over VNC (TigerVNC and Remmina)

$ prime-run blender

Maybe an Aside question: is it possible to run the Telsa K80 without hybrid?

Oh. Then I really dont know how that works. Obviously not quite the same.

Yes. Look into envycontrol which will allow you to set iGPU-only or dGPU-only.

Thanks @cscs !

Yeah, the Telsa K80 is a server card. I can try adding another card or using the iGPU with a monitor to see if I get any different results instead of running things over ssh/vnc.

glxinfo itself may have been failing due to the lack of gfx.

So the ‘test’ may have been invalid.

To prime-run:
As shown in some of those outputs the prime-run script is really just a handful of env vars bundled together;

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia

So selectively using some and not all may be of benefit to you.
I will also leave the archwiki page on prime in general:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME

Gotcha.

I was able to install envycontrol and the kde optimus gpu switch plasmanoid as well and I see the options for integrated, hybrid and nvidia in the tray icon:

But switching to didn’t seem to do anything when running nvidia-smi etc.

I was able to attach the integrated gpu and it to a monitor and was able to login, after I shut down the TigerVNC service.

I wonder if I should downgrade the version of CUDA per the nvidia downloads for Tesla K80?

I have linux68-nvidia-470xx 470.239.06-16 installed for the driver, which seems to match the Version in the downloads, but I have Cuda 12.4 (per Manjaro Extra cuda package) instead of 11.4 installed. Do you think that could be the issue?

I’m only seeing 11.7 in the AUR:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages?O=0&SeB=nd&K=cuda-11&outdated=&SB=p&SO=d&PP=50&submit=Go

So I’ll try that. And if that doesn’t work, I may have to try and install 11.4 manually using the run script or something:

More info on the 470.239.06 driver, which seems to be the last driver for Telsa K80:

I found this, which I may be able to use in order to downgrade to CUDA 11.4 after I try the 11.7 version first:
