Nvidia drivers not working properly (no contact with nvidia-smi)

Hey there!

I’ve been dual booting with windows and gnome manjaro for quite a while on my home pc, but recently when I installed a kde manjaro image to dual boot my laptop as well, it appeared not to work with many things surrounding gaming.

I attempted to use lutris and bottles to wrap the EA app, but after some crashes I found out that nvidia-smi fails to establish contact with nvidia drivers, so I then proceeded to start trying out many different nvidia drivers, but after a reboot (whenever inxi -G displayed anything other than nouveau as the driver) the vast majority resulted in a permanent grey screen before getting to log in (The only driver apart from nouveau that did work was the 470xx version of the linux612 driver, but when booted the system completely failed to load the actual window manager, task bar, etc.

I am on linux 6.12.11 on a laptop with an NVidia Quadro P1000 (and before you ask, yes, I did go through several topics similar to this on the forum, but all of them resulted in the same grey screen upon booting)

If this post is am missing any vital information, please let me know, and thank you for reading!

Use Download The Latest Official NVIDIA Drivers to search for the driver package supporting your gpu

According to that search 550-series driver supports your GPU.

Manjaro supports this GPU on stable and testing branch using kernel 6.12 which provides linux612-nvidia 550.144.03

This points to using mhwd to install the driver

mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

As it is a laptop - there is two hybrid options based on the iGPU type

  • video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime
  • video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

A third option using only the dGPU may also be possible - but may require some effort - and likely not desired as dGPU is consuming more power than iGPU

Thank you for the response, I already have attempted using the intel-nvidia-prime hybrid however, as well as installing the driver using that exact command. This is what I tried initially, after which for the first time I was met with being stuck at a grey screen after boot.

On an additional note, cpu is intel i7-8750H
