I just installed manjaro and I cant make it work.
5 hours browsing in the forums looking for an answer.
The problem started with youtube fullscreen:
Sluggerish. Like a stuttering video.
I have a Nvidia 760 card
I wanted to upgrade Manjaro from an old version I had but everytjing went bad.
I ve tried nvidia-xconfig but i get nothing.
On install I chose propietary drivers.
On Hardware I can see the proprietary driver video-nvidia-470xx.
I’ve tried uninstalling and installing with open source drivers. Same thing. I then tried manual install using the guide on internet on how to install nvidea cards butnthe same error persisted.
I dont know what to do!
I need the comouter to teach. I teach using the Xournall program.
Please If someone has an idea…
Hello @acmaths and welcome
Probably start with adding your system information. See: [HowTo] Request support
Probably the CPU is not strong enough and the nvidia card doesn’t support VP9 hardware decoding. In addition, activation must be forced for h264 hardware decoding in the browser, for example, in case of nvidia. This can definitely make the video sluggish.
can you tell which version iso you have used ?
under terminal , can you report

I hope Im not making the thread unreadable with so much text
Thank you for your answer.
I just installed the software again hoping for a miracle. But the same problem happens over and over again.
I have dual Boot with windows but for teaching I have hundreds of material made with Xournall++ and it works only with linux (There is a windows version but it s…s. It works terrible.)
What I most curious find is the following:
sudo nvidia-settings
[sudo] Passwort für ac:
ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system
and this:
sudo nvidia-xconfig
WARNING: Unable to locate/open X configuration file.
sh: Zeile 1: pkg-config: Kommando nicht gefunden.
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
No nvidia command works.
As though it werent installed.
It wasnt like that with the previous version I had.
I have dual Boot. The video in Windows 11 works perfect.
It used to work fine here too. But the old version I had was 2 years old.
I had to update. Now I dont have access to the nvidia set up.
It is as though it werent installed at all.
can you check
pacman -Qs nvidia-settings
if missing , can you add
sudo pacman -S nvidia-settings
and retry
nvidia-smi
sudo nvidia-settings
acmaths:
Display: wayland
The reason is simply, that you run Plasma with Wayland. The 470xx has very limited support, so there is no GPU acceleration at all! See here:
That is a pure software renderer → only CPU. So no wonder that the system feels sluggish, the CPU has to work a lot.
Therefore I suggest you to switch to X11. With that old nvidia card, your will never expect full Wayland support due nvidia’s update policy. Normally you can switch to X11 on the Login Screen (SDDM).
I looked up your CPU Intel Core i7-4790K
. Seems it has a integrated GPU. I guess you disabled it on UEFI/BIOS level, therefore not reported in the system info. That Intel GPU has full support for wayland. See what @Olli says

@acmaths post the output of

envycontrol installed ? if not install it
pamac install envycontrol
please report to go on with the next steps

Hi!
I wrote the answer above
I did it. I dont know what disadvantages it has but now at least I can watch videos like I do in Windows 11.
Exactly it has an integrated GPU. I dont use it because I need two monitors to work. Sometimes three.
The Nvidia Card has three outputs.
I thought about upgrading the PC but it works so fast. It boots in a few secs and Videos 4k work fine.

sudo envycontrol -s nvidia
reboot
and recheck
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE && glxinfo | grep server
post the output
I did that and rebooted but then I got a black screen after login.
I had to login with X11 (no idea what that is)
I can write the output of
using X11
The output is
x11

well done. you stay on x11 and the nvidia driver is working now.

For the next time I have to install Manjaro (probably soon because Ive some driver issues in Windows (I have dual Boot)):
I login with X11 and that’s it?
Or do I have to install envycontrol and run
?

yes you stay on x11 because wayland doesn’t work proper.
as long as
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE && glxinfo | grep server
indicates nvidia then you’re fine. btw. the change to x11 is automatically done. you don’t need to switch to x11 at every login.

Thank u. I thought I had to leave Manjaro because of my old PC.
Danke Dir Magavolt!
Greetings from Argentina.
Like we say in Argentina: Marche doneta al Grupo!
Ive donated 3€ to Manjaro. Not much money I know.
