Nvidia and their new way to engage with the Linux User Community

Since 550 driver series Nvidia started a new experiment in which they engage with the Linux User Community: 550.78 release feedback & discussion thread - Linux - NVIDIA Developer Forums. Nvidia tend to do two driver series, production grade and new features. The current latest versions as of 3.7.2024 are:

  • Current production branch release: 550.90.07
  • Current new feature branch release: 555.58.02

For now users who use Plasma 6.0 or 6.1 have a mixed result, depending on which graphics card they use. Some articles on that:

We have to see on how it unfolds and how fast Nvidia may react on urgent issues users will now report to them. Especially when they plan to switch to the open-kernel module with 560 driver series later this year: https://www.phoronix.com/news/NVIDIA-R560-Open-Default

Thanks for the overview, are there any plans how Manjaro will handle the transition between this two driver’s?

I personally don’t have much interest to try out the newest Open Source Driver right now, since X11 is running under KDE pretty flawless for me on my Turing GPU.

Its a little unsettling to see that many people report issue’s with Steam and gaming with this new driver.

But i saw in our forum, nvidia user’s with the newest gen. 40x0 GPU’s who are forced to use Wayland already because they experience more issues under X11.

I would love to see in Manjaro Settings Manager>Hardware Configuration
a option to switch between this two (three with Nouveau) nvidia driver’s.
